DESIGN NAME: Alaska Bush People
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Photography
INSPIRATION: I was inspired by classic Westerns of the 1970s, specifically the Robert Altman film "Pat Garret and Billy the Kid" and Sergio Leone's "Once Upon a Time in the West." I was inspired by documentary photographers of the 1970s such as William Eggleston and yet I wanted to bring a modern feel with sophisticated techniques and so used Gregory Crewdson as another reference.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Print Campaign for Discovery Channel (US). I was asked to create a modern series of portraits while intimating an antique and rustic feel. I decided to shoot the cast in rustic surroundings while using a refined, sophisticated lighting technique.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The images were used to highlight the unique personality of the characters. The images were used across almost all marketing channels around the world, from advertising posters to print campaigns, online, and across all streaming platforms. They were also used on-air in lower thirds. Essentially the images helped shape and define the story narrative for the end viewer, reinforcing a consistent and engaging messaging that these people were different and worth watching.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was shot in both Alaska and Colorado in early 2017 for use across all Discovery Channel platforms worldwide.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: I decided to use the environment as a character in the shot. These people live outside society and I felt the sense of place was very important to who they were. But to make sure the focus stayed on their personalities I used a lighting technique similar to a softened spotlight. This reinforced an idea of magical-realism.I used Borncolor Siros L strobes with ProFoto Softboxes with Soft Eggcrates on the front, an inner baffle but importantly NO outer diffusion layer.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: All photos were shot in full frame 35meg RAW format. All were shot on Canon 5D Mark IV cameras with 50mm and 35mm L Prime Lenses. I shot tethered to a Mac running Capture One and adjusted in Adobe Lightroom.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Initially, I started where I always start, looking at my shelves of photography books for inspiration. That's where that slightly magical Gregory Crewdson imagery first took hold. But there was also a very rugged quality to the characters of this show which reminded me of the revisionist westerns of the 1970s, particularly Robert Altman and to a lesser degree Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah. There was a sense of the tonality and color from those westerns I thought might work well.
CHALLENGE: It was important with these characters that their sense of choosing a radically different life than most would choose, still came from a place of sanity. In essence, though from the outside they might seem crazy, they were actually simply people being honest in how they chose to live their life far outside societal norms.
