DESIGN NAME: Terraza
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence
INSPIRATION: Inspired by the context of the property which merges urban with the coast, we fused Hampton’s style with modern elements to create a comfortable, coastal ambience. The platform design borrows idea from natural leveling; the feature colour is extracted from the palette of ocean; materials like timber, stone, and linen is found in the woods; the dynamic lines formulate the flow of wind. All these elements echo with each other to create a symphony of the nature for the household to enjoy.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Making use of the high ceiling, mezzanine levels are created to extend space. The multi-function area at raised platform acts as the intermediate between different levels and merges semi-private area with common space to promote interaction among the family. Segmented steps instead of long stairs connect the platforms and link up space, with the wooden curve gliding along the ceiling from the foyer to living area across dining area, outlining the path of flat and ties the entire flat together.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The original layout is scattered and space is not well linked. The new design provides a better flow and smoothens the circulation. The central axis of the flat is common area that facilitates family gathering. The master bedroom locates at one side of the flat which provides private area for the couple, whereas son's bedroom locates at the other side, creating personal space for the young man. Common area is also extended upstairs for semi-private purposes, increasing flexibility of space.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started in April 2017 and finished in September 2017 in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Substantiality is a critical factor when we choose materials for the design, as the clients hoped that the renovation could last for a long period. Durable materials and user-friendly hardware (e.g. electrical hinges and smart lighting) are therefore used. We also care about the nature of materials to the environment and human. Eco-friendly and bio-degradable ingredient are our first priority, such as E0 wood panel for furniture, which is toxic free with low levels of formaldehyde.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The residential apartment locates at Park Avenue, a private housing estate in Tai Kok Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong. The property sites adjacent to Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter. The saleable area of the apartment is 950 square feet, with a ceiling height of 4.3 meter.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: -
CHALLENGE: The high ceiling of the apartment provides great possibilities, yet giving us a struggle between its visuospatial benefits and space utilization. We tried many layout options before we achieved the final design: full ceiling height is kept in common living area, and mezzanine design is done in private area. There is also a problem at the existing structure that a low beam runs across the plan. The designer created a wooden curve to not only hide the beam, but also featuring the overall design.
