| DESIGN NAME: Lotus on Water PRIMARY FUNCTION: Womenswear Collection INSPIRATION: Inspired by designer's name SU.YEON which means lotus flower on the water in Chinese characters. Since the designer found herself that she is losing her identity to fit into the community that she currently involved in, she believes that it is time for her to realize who truly she is - She is Korean and believes in Buddhism. With the fusion of oriental moods and contemporary fashions, she explores an excellent balance between a sense of Asian art and an exceptional draping. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Particular embellishment techniques, architectural silhouette, creative construction and vibrant color palette are distinctive characteristics of this collection. The designer used natural or transparent fabrics to connote symbolic meaning, purity of lotus flower and water. Each look represents the lotus flower on the water in different ways of designs - a petal - inspired draping, floating flower - inspired hand beading and screen printing, and the transparent water - inspired layered fabric. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This is a collection which a wide age range of women (10s-60s) could wear for their wardrobe. From casual to special occasion, the collection consists of girlish, lovely, feminine, luxurious, and elegant style looks. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in June 2017 and finished in November 2017 in New York, USA. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Draping, hand sewing, hand beading, feather embellishment, machine sewing, print cutting, screen printing(heat transfer), layering. Materials: Organza, silk, cotton, linen, satin, brocade, crape, heat transfer flock. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Measurement: bust 32inch(81.28cm), waist 24.5inch(62.23cm), hip 35inch(88.9cm) US 2/ IT 38 TAGS: SU.YEON, suyeon kim, fashion designer, womenswear, architectural fashion, creative fashion design, creative draping, beading, embellishment, vibrant color RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This collection is originated from the idea of 'who truly am I'. From searching the meaning of designer's name, she tried to design this collection to be more like Suyeon. The designer researched Korean traditional clothing and art, and then she tries to apply orientalism to feminine, architectural, and contemporary fashion. As life is not a single layer, she used many layers of fabrics. Also, experimented various techniques(draping, beading, and screen printing) for fabric development to express the beauty of the lotus flower on the water. CHALLENGE: The most challenging part was using many layers of organza fabrics. Since organza is very delicate fabric, countless hours have been spent to clean finish hundreds of edges of organza pieces for look 2 and 5. Also, the designer tried to create three-dimensional shape perfectly with designer's own draping and pattern making techniques. Most of the looks in the collection consisted of multiple types of couture hand beading techniques to create the designer's own distinctive breading designs.
