| DESIGN NAME: Place of Light PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential villas INSPIRATION: We trace the footprint of the aesthetics both at home and abroad, from which we find that in the course of pursuing beauty, we always soften the sharpness, reduce the complexity, and finally integrate it with the real world. When we look at the pursuit during the Wei and Jin Dynasties, namely “the blossoms of the lotus are more beautiful than the artificial works”, or when we examine the literati taste of the Northern Song Dynasty, namely “roughness”, “nature”, and “plainness” UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The market is filled with luxury houses endowed with various concepts. Place of Light is different from others, which is used to hold life rather than to copy styles, from which one can feel the care on the city and the thinking on the aesthetics made by the development and design team of the Poly Group. Design is always a process of selection. The “retaining” and “abandoning” are related to the understanding of function, the orientation of values and the perception of beauty. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The light casts into this five-storey villa mainly through the patio in the atrium. The underground two storeys are used to meet the owner’s preferences. The sitting space in the first storey is equipped with front and rear courtyard, which is the most precious resource of the building. The second and third storey is the family’s living space. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The light casts into this five-storey villa mainly through the patio in the atrium. The underground two storeys are used to meet the owner’s preferences. The sitting space in the first storey is equipped with front and rear courtyard, which is the most precious resource of the building. The second and third storey is the family’s living space. The most special part of this building is the 5-storey and 17-meter-high patio used for light casting. It is the core area for creating the “light” memory. The first intuition of LSD is to leave blank. We also attempt to use the seasons theme or other more artistic expressions to decorate this space, but when the designer stands at the bottom of the patio, when two beams of light cast on walls, slowly move and interlace with each other, at the same time, the color of the setting sun is filled with the glass box - LSD begins to firmly believe that the best and the only decoration way for this space is the changing light according to time and weather. With the support given by the Poly design team, we overturn all programs and make place for light. The design should make the space reasonable and create resources based on the original building. As the sitting space of the residence, the first storey would be the first impression of us on the whole building. In this space LSD places a home garden, forming a sense of outdoor entrance. It becomes a part of the whole space, not only maximizing the visual sense on the wide of the living room, but also matching the scale of the building. The south and north courtyards are integrated as an extension of the living function. We conducting design, we take the courtyard and the living room and dining room as a whole. In terms of the layout, we use main sofa and large coffee table to create a stable surface, producing primary and secondary relations and space rhythm. In terms of the furniture, we restrain the desire of interpretation and egotism, and make place for the building and space. The building or hard outfit is both the prerequisite and restraint of the soft outfit. However, all innovations originate from restraint. Our work is to make the original design intent more clear due to our involvement. Most of the time, we have to dismantle some seemingly reasonable things to solve interference. The largest core of the negative second storey is the 7-meter-high and 9-meter-wide LED screen. Based on the comfort consideration and the principle of not taking the private interest as the goal of designing model room, LSD demolishes darkroom and uses load-bearing column to form a medium-high water bar. Furthermore, LSD opens the original enclosed space and creates a composite space which can be used as a tea room, a cigar room, or a wine tasting room, with the help of the multifunctional long table on the right. In this way, the space is significantly extended, and more diverse social contacts can be conducted here. In the initial design stage, we leave a beam of light running through the negative second storey and the negative first storey. The light trajectories and angles have been carefully measured. When the fitness equipment moved before the transparent glass of the negative first storey, you would feel you are exercising in an outside gym. The parent-child activity area is located in the second storey of the building, which connects three different rooms. The core goal is to let design intention give way to life. Master bedroom & Study room are located in the third storey. LSD places the original dressing room in the cloakroom, which lies behind the background wall of the master bedroom. In this way, it widens 900mm for the master bedroom and the main restroom, respectively. So the unnecessary functions give place to space experience and necessary scale. TAGS: the greatest design is invisible and becomes a part of the real world RESEARCH ABSTRACT: LSD insists that design is born to solve problems, and this is the most basic and fundamental value of the design. Apart from solving problem, the style resulting from selective expressions and emotion contact and differences establishment is also important. However, the nobleness or the secularization is not only determined by those two factors, but also affected by the reflection on times and the values originating from the design. All in all, any practices just for meeting the market, in essence, is to pay tribute to wealth, which will eventually be substituted, even it wears a poetic or artistic mask.
