DESIGN NAME: Reformation
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Menswear
INSPIRATION: Reformation was inspired by the vulnerability of a flower as you peel the petals until you get to the center of it. Flowers to me sort of has an androgynous quality. Flowers pollenate for reproduction and also carry a feminine visual aesthetic. This inspired me to design a collection that brings masculinity and femininity together to create Reformation.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design in this collection consist of layers inspired from flowers blooming. The layering details accentuate female design elements that’s not normally seen in a menswear line.
The layering, and structural elements has a cohesion to the collection giving a good line bordering between masculinity and femininity.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The knit textiles are serged together to create the seam and a single pointed needle was used to construct the twill woven fabrics. There are woven pieces constructed on the knit as a decorative used by a single pointed needle.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project began January 2017 at The Art Institute of California San Diego and completed July 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design is presented through curves, layering, and structural elements. Materials used for the pants consist of a polyester twill woven fabric allowing a structural cohesion while the tops are a polyester jersey, and polyester knit for a contrast wear between woven and knits. Polyester rayon satin is used in each garment as a design detail accentuating the feminine quality of the garment within the layering designs.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The researched designs came from the concept of layering. Women clothing is more ahead of menswear with garments commonly layered. This alone further expanded the designs, holding onto the idea of the way woman dress in order to translate into a menswear line. Curved hems and layers of fabric display a feminine presentation of the garments while the boxy silhouette, and structural designs present a masculine contrast. The masculine and feminine qualities combined elude a unique fashion taste that isn't for every male, and only for the fearless. Innovative, and new, helping create a new direction for menswear, Reformation.
CHALLENGE: The difficulty occurred in the sewing operations. Figuring out which seams to sew first in the pants. Mock ups helped guide the process easier and in return learning certain steps through trial and error. Another challenged face was dealing with knits. Sewing knits can be a struggle with the tension on the sewing machine. In the process, this taught me the patience of craft, time, and skill.
