DESIGN NAME: Intersect
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Dresser
INSPIRATION: Different volumes that connect or intersect each other are exciting. It is interesting to give the beholder the impression that something is floating or has a lighter appearance than it actually has. I based my design on these ideas and used contrasting materials to highlight my line of thoughts.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Two pieces of furniture are united and form one object. A frame made of solid zebra wood acts as a console table and intersects with the dresser. Due to a shift of these two elements, the diagonal part of the frame becomes the handle of the big drawers, making it easy to open and close them. The top of the dresser can also be used as an additional table top space. The dresser is placed between the frame which makes the black body appear lighter and it gives the object room to breathe.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: This piece adapts to the user’s requirements by providing different levels of storing areas that can be used to put down daily used items, showcase certain objects or even use them as a working space. The drawers offer a lot of storage space which makes this object very functional and practical.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in November 2017 in Linz and finished in October 2018 in Linz.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The console table is made of solid zebra wood which grain is running all the way around the frame and therefore highlights the beauty of the wood and reflects the experienced craftsmanship. Melamine-faced chipboard is used for the body of the dresser and its drawers are made out of birch plywood. High-quality drawer slides and the big handles increase the user-friendliness. Each drawer closes effortlessly on its own. Small supports in the bottom of the dresser give the construction the required stability.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: I needed to find a way to make a heavy looking dresser appear lighter and to add something interesting to it. So I played around with different types of shapes and volumes and tried to position them in a way that they connect and need each other to work. If one element was removed, the functionality would not be given anymore.
CHALLENGE: Finding the right balance of the proportions of the dresser and the frame of the console table was probably the most challenging part. Also, the shift of the two elements had to look right. Furthermore, small supports had to be mounted underneath the dresser in order to transfer the loads. But it was important to find a spot for them where they do not show to disturb the overall look of the piece.
