DESIGN NAME: Hop On
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Mobility Vehicle for pedestrian street
INSPIRATION: Living in Andorra City Center (Europe) and voluntarily do not want to own a car for my shopping needs. I walk to do all my shopping on a pedestrian shopping street as it is better for my health and the environment. One day with a foot problem I imagined this solution that could help so many people such as older people, families with children… Helps revitalizing city center shopping and dining out pedestrian streets, as more and more people live in cities. Also improves tourist’s experience.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A modern way helping people to go from one store to another or to their preferred coffee shop located on a city pedestrian street. Similar to a tram but less invasive of the pedestrian space, zero emission as it is an electric platform on wheels that you can step on and off as you wish. It is self-driven as it is following a track. Its aim is really to move slowly so that users can see the shops on the way. Helping anyone with difficulty to walk or when loaded with bags… Improved urban living!
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Self-driven the device is moving at same speed as a walking person which can stop it by pressing the STOP button. Press GO to get started. If there is an object in front it is stop automatically and vocally ask user to remove the object to go on. The numerous device on the same track are connected together by computer and keep a distance between them.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was presented in end of 2017 to the President of a leading infrastructure Organization of Andorra (Europe) specialized in the field of electricity. Under consideration at present time.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The device main body parts are to be roto-moulded (plastic) while other parts are metallic parts, an electric motor, a solar panel. The track is made of prefabricated modules that are linked together and set a street level.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The mobility device is designed to be small not to be invasive of the pedestrian space. The platform measure only 2.4 meter-long and 1.2 meters wide and can hold 4 seated persons, plus a wheelchair plus 2 to 4 more standing persons. The height of the platform is only 40mm from the street level to make it very easy to access it.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The device uses existing technologies. The innovation is to design such a mobility platform which is improving urban living, developing the economy of city center pedestrian streets. Almost every European city has at least one pedestrian business street. Many North American and Asia cities also have such streets. With the aging and overweight growing population such device will fulfill a market need.
CHALLENGE: The design challenge was to make it as low as possible to the street level to make it accessible, while making its use safe to the public with its hand rails, night time lights, seats... The use of a quasi hidden track into the ground for the electric power which request an easy and fast installation was key.
