| DESIGN NAME: Lane 19 Art St. PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Apartment INSPIRATION: The idea of the project is to conserve energy and reduce carbon emission, mainly we try to reduce the usage of electricity, and combine it with the concept of green building. Also by using the most common and accessible materials, without further processing, such as varnish, it reduces the emissions of carbon. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The home owner is an interior designer and interested in saving energy daily, therefore, energy saving would be the main concept of this case. To achieve the goals of energy saving, the designer removes partition walls to connect all ambient light and sets the area of the living room free. Using circulating water system to avoid waiting for hot water cause waste, and also combined the geothermal system to solve the problem of cold floor during winter. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Simplified materials is a particularity for this case. The designer insists on retaining the building’s originality, so he uses the most common and accessible materials, like cement finish, cast iron, stainless steel, wood, and so on. Wood-wool cement board is chosen as the single material for the ceiling, and uses asymmetrical design to make various levels of changes. As time goes, traces of the years can be seen clearly on these simple materials, making people feel more intimate to the space. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To Achieve the goals of energy saving, other than removing partition walls, usage of circulating water system along with geothermal system, the usage of bathroom equipment with energy labels is one of the best way of a green lifestyle as well. Besides, I replaced the original French window, which is faced to east, with straight-type transoms. This not only leads natural wind into the space but also lowers indoor temperature to reduce the use of air conditioner in summer rates.
