DESIGN NAME: Moonlight
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Interactive wall lamps
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for the Moonlight comes from the playfulness of light and shadow, the shift of day and night, phases of the moon, power of duality and contrast, with all the nuances in between. We wanted to create an interactive light objects that emphasize the touch and allow the users to have a unique ambient experience.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Moonlight is an interactive LED wall luminary designed to produce endless possibilities when creating atmosphere, playing with light and shadows. The design concept involves different sizes and each one having two light sources. A front light and a back light. They light up and dim inversely proportional. The lights can be used and arranged in endless ways in interiors to change the atmosphere according to the occasion or the current mood. User can interact with the object using simple touch gestures. The latest technology is also incorporated so they can be controlled from a distance through smart phone apps.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The light is being changed using intuitive touch gestures. One finger tap for step by step increase/decrease, two quick taps for full front light – or full back light, and holding the finger on the surface for a slow automated crossfade.
These same gestures and behavior are conveyed through the smartphone app and the touch screen.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in March 2013 and had several iterations and technical improvements since. It was exhibited at the Light + Building in Frankfurt 2016, and two times in the Design Museum in Singapore where it stands as a permanent feature today.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The LEDs are positioned in the outer housing rim, and they emit light towards the center. That was one of the technical challenges, to make the light distribute evenly throughout entire front surface. This was achieved using the Light Guide Panel technology. There are several layers of laser etched acrylic panels combined with the diffusing foil. The housing is made from solid aluminum, anodized in black. The aluminum gives a very elegant finish and also keeps the LED's from overheating.
The touch sensitive surface is also made for aluminum and is connected to the capacitive sensor chip. The second chip is used to control the LED's and make sure the dimming is behaving in a responsive and seamless way for the best user visual experience. There is a third chip that serves the wireless function.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The lamps come in three sizes: 200 x 200 x 40mm, 300 x 300 x 40mm, 450 x 450 x 40mm.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: We started working on this project as a in-house design concept. The main objective was to create an interactive object that uses physical touch besides the latest wireless technology. We believed in the emotional connection between the user and the object using the very natural human need to sense and explore combining tactile and visual experience. In order to find the best tactile experience we firstly experimented with mechanical properties of the potentiometers and later with much finer capacitive sensor technology. We had many iterations and tried to get feedback from the people in our surroundings and also at exhibitions.
CHALLENGE: We designed the shape of the luminaries deliberately simple in appearance, with focus on light and interaction. Besides many technical ones, one of the biggest design challenge was to invite the user to interact and quickly understand the behavior of the lights without much prior explanation.
