| DESIGN NAME: Kord Minimalist Wallet PRIMARY FUNCTION: Card holder INSPIRATION: Inspired by geometry, simple shapes and clean lines, the KORD card holder is a minimalist card wallet designed with great aesthetics and functionality in mind. The two side pieces are made from either Beech wood or a combination of Beech wood and 100% recycled plastic, they can be easily customised (i.e. engraved/printed) on the entire surface, while the thin elastic cord laced in a zig-zag pattern ensures maximum visibility of the design and a tight hold for the cards inside. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The KORD card holder is a minimalist card wallet designed with great aesthetics and functionality in mind. The elastic cord wraps tightly around the two side pieces keeping the cards and bills securely inside. The wallet can easily accommodate 7-8 credit cards, a few business cards and some bills making it the perfect, easy to carry accessory and a great alternative to the bulky, conventional wallets. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The cards can be inserted through the top side of the wallet (the straight side) and they can be easily slided out by pushing them through the bottom side (the V-shaped side). PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started in November 2016, finished in January 2017 and exhibited in various design events such as: Romanian Design Week in May 2017, Cluj Design Days in September 2017 and ZAIN - Design Expressions in October 2017. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: One of the main challenges for this project was to create a product with minimum impact on the environment. The two side pieces are made from either Beech wood (sourced from FSC certified suppliers) or a combination of Beech wood and 100% recycled plastic, they are cut to shape using a CNC laser cutter and finished / assembled by hand. The packaging was also designed with the same idea in mind and thus using recycled cardboard, optimised for minimum material waste. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 95 mm x 65 mm x 8 mm TAGS: card holder, minimalist wallet, wooden wallet, wooden card holder, minimalist card holder, card wallet, minimalist card wallet RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Research was done using Google search and international handmade/design marketplaces in respect of the most common alternatives on the market. Most similar wallets were designed to use a wide elastic band wrapped around the middle to keep the wallet together. This was an issue to me as it limited the possibility for customisation. The solution was to use a thin cord wrapped in a zig-zag pattern to maximise the visible space on each side. CHALLENGE: The main design challenge was to create a wooden card holder/wallet that could easily adapt in thickness as needed and which could also be easily customised on both sides with new/customs designs or client work/logos. This was achieved by replacing the wide elastic bands used on most similar card holders with a thin, 1 mm elastic cord wrapped around in a zig-zag pattern. The cord acts as a stopper on both the sides and the bottom of the wallet, ensures a secure hold even when the wallet is used with just one card and allows maximum visibility on any custom design that would be printed on the surface.
