| DESIGN NAME: Berlin Bicycle Rack PRIMARY FUNCTION: Indoor bicycle storing INSPIRATION: Inspired by nordic design, the BERLIN bicycle rack was created as a multipurpose indoor storing solution for small spaces. The challenge was to design a highly functional rack that not only allows the storing of a bicycle inside the comfort and safety of a home or office but also work as a wall-mounted storage unit for small decor / bicycle accessories that would allow the seamless integration of the rack and bicycle into the overall interior design. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The BERLIN bicycle rack was designed as a multipurpose indoor storing solution for small spaces. The rack can be mounted on any wall and allows for the storage of one bicycle as well as some small bicycle accessories, books/magazines or home/office decor items. It is made of high-quality Birch wood, precisely cut to shape using CNC machines and assembled and finished by hand, thus combining modern technology and traditional woodworking to create one-of-a-kind contemporary piece of design. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The shelf can be easily mounted using a "French cleat" system that is fixed to the wall using two screws. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was started in February 2016, finished in June 2016 and exhibited in ZAIN - Design Expressions Festival in September 2016. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The bicycle rack is made out of strong Birch wood, cut into shape using automated, precise cutting techniques and assembled and finished by hand, thus combining modern technology and traditional woodworking to create one of a kind contemporary pieces of design. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width: 12.5 cm without additional shelf / 35 cm with additional shelf mounted Height: 40 cm Depth (from back to front): 32 cm TAGS: bicycle shelf, bicycle rack, wooden bike shelf, wooden bike rack, bicycle storage, bike storage, indoor bike rack RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research on the available bicycle storage solutions on the market was done during the period 2013-2015 while the final design was launched in 2016. The research was made using mainly Google searches but also handmade / design marketplaces. At that time the most products available on the market were designed to be used on a horizontal position, working like small floating shelves, that had limited added functionality. So with the BERLIN I took the classic design and flipped it 90 degrees in a vertical position and added a horizontal shelf for more versatility and storage options on each side. CHALLENGE: The main design challenge was to create a highly functional and versatile bicycle storage system while also keeping the product as compact as possible for more cost effective international shipping. This was achieved by splitting the interior space in two with a go-through, removable and oversized shelf that allows storing items on the outside of the rack as well. The modular hangers also offer a lot of versatility allowing the user to hang smaller as well as larger items on the sides. The back plate also extends on the bottom of the rack to accommodate one additional hanger for added functionality.
