DESIGN NAME: SPINE
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Environment Cleansing Lighting System
INSPIRATION: Looking at the Human Spine as our main inspiration. The idea of the lamp is that it has be flexible, adaptable and retain the vitality of our well being. Just like the spine itself.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The initial manifesto was to create the most flexible and adaptable lamp on the market. We also incorporated our unique air cleaning technology into the design and aim for this lamp to be relatively low cost and easy to use. Mobility of the design is the key as it will attain IP67 waterproof rating and attachable to any magnetic surafces.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Photocatalytic coating uses natural light and air to clean so during daytime this will work naturally. When night falls the OLED panel will continue this process thus creating a continues cleaning cycle. The rest of the lamp is very self explanatory in operation and can be click onto any magnetic surfaces. With wireless/wired charging embedded inside the lamp the design is modular and be combined into a multitude of shapes and sizes to suit any given situations.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The initial idea started in 2015 but the LED technology at the time does not allow us to make the light so flexible. So we waited until LG Korea contacted us in 2017 with their OLED invention that we can continue this project. We are currently waiting for the first production batch of the OLED panels and the project is aiming for the first prototype in mid 2018 with a possible market lunch in late 2018/early 2019.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Urbanization, is the word of our times. In 1950 only 30% of the world’s population lives in the city but it is projected that by 2050 over 70% of the global populations will be urban dwellers. With such rapid growth cities are faced with undaunting levels of pollution unheard of just a century ago. As architects and designers we are entering into a new Era of environmental thinking that has to either help our planet, recycle some of our creations and consider the biosynthesis of humans with nature. Furniture has always been one of the most vibrant discipline in design as comparatively the physical restriction is less thus leaving more leeway to push for innovation. There are many up-cycle creations, environmental conscious ideas and even some that biomorphs with part of our body. But I wonder, what if a piece of furniture can help your well being as well as the external environment while still looking good in any given situations. Working with our Italian technical partners we finally came up with solution that can use Light and Air, 2 elements provided by nature, to clean our environment of toxins and bacteria! Let me explain more:
Photocatalysis is process that uses nano-particles and Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) to clean VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds). When exposed to an ultraviolet light source, such as the sun, the coating's oxidative property decomposes organic substances such as microbes on its surface. In addition, the hydrophilic nature of the coating causes water that comes into contact to form an even layer, thereby allowing the dust and dirt that have accumulated on the surface to be washed away. These two properties create the "self-cleaning" effect. While this process was revolutionary as an architectural material it is very limited to UV rays which are harmful in long term exposure to human skin. We have come up with a new compound that uses Tungsten Trioxide (WO3) to creates the same cleansing effect. What this offer as an advantage is that the activation process only needs any source of light and air to start the process. This can be done with any present interior/exterior light source and air from natural wind or even air condition units, thus eliminating any direct exposure to UV rays. This specialized treatment can be applied to any surface and is Non-toxic and Bio-degradable.
Our design, started life as a manifesto to create the most flexible and adaptable lamp on the market that can also help your well being while being low cost. Taking inspiration from the spine, one the most important part of the human body and creates flexibility, support and nerve information for us to survive. During the day when SPINE is placed near natural light and air it will work to clean the surrounding environment while during the night when the light is switched on, the cleansing action will continue. We do not want to “pre-formed” any OLED into a specific geometry but make the user becomes the creator. We believe all of us contains has a hidden artistic talent!!!
It is the world first environment cleansing furniture that makes you and your family live healthier and happier but also a design that can work on mass to clean our planet. We believe furniture has to be more then just a nice piece of functional design and we hope that SPINE will lead the way for a new generation of environmental living that any health conscious individuals or planetarian will love to have.
CHALLENGE: We have been working on this concept for over 3 years with the sole purpose of creating "the most flexible, adaptable and environmental lamp on the market" and we had been stuck with the design process because of existing archaic lighting technology. Since we discover the advent of LG Flexible OLED system we realize our concept can finally move into realization. We also waited for a long time for the process of Photocatalysis to mature and since last year with breakthrough in Tungsten Trioxide application we can finally merge 2 amazing technologies into our revolutionary product that we always intended from the very beginning.
