DESIGN NAME: Einstein
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Bridge Lighting
INSPIRATION: The vicinity of the sea and the curves of the architecture inspired me to close the gap between the bridge and the water, and bring the people using the bridge to a playful world of ships and marine creatures.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Lighting Design Concept for a Bridge over Einstein street, close to the sea. inspired by the sea, the design includes lighting sculptures of sea creatures alongside mainly linear lighting to accentuate the curvy architecture.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Creating a lighting theme and narrative makes crossing the bridge a memorable experience, and helps accentuating and enhancing the architectural forms. The playful design makes some of the architectural motifs more implicit, and thus more accessible.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project is in the planning stages, and construction is currently scheduled to begin by the end of 2018. the site is located in the north of Tel Aviv, Israel.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The design process included creating different lighting plans for each design goal, and integrating them to create the overall plan. Next the design was refined using feedback from lighting simulations, until the final layout was achieved.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Bridge dimensions: length 100m, width 10m, height above street level 7m. The bridge has 2 long sections, which start and end at the same height, however one dips down and the other arches slightly up, and thus a minor height difference is created, that reaches a maximum of 0.6m at the middle of the bridge.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Although a concept design, it was important to make sure the design Although a concept design, it was important to make sure the design is feasible. Therefore, I researched possible ways to produce the custom luminaires for the project: sea stars, nautilus shells and selectively opaque diffusers. The solution is using existing outdoor luminaires and encapsulating them with 3D printed sculptures. such an approach would assure compliance with local standards and regulations, without affecting the reliability and endurance of the lamps.
CHALLENGE: The foremost challenge was the need to balance between creating a unique theme for the lighting design and enhancing the architecture. Other challenges were the need to adhere to municipal guidelines; as well as the desire to create a unified feeling to the bridge and the underside of the bridge.
