DESIGN NAME: Bittersweet
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Womenswear Collection
INSPIRATION: Opposites attract. Therefore I decided to merge the topic Prison and Barbie. I want to raise awareness to break free from mental constriction and limits made by ourselves. There are so many prisons, so many invisible, because the only exist in people's mind! The whole collection contains iron constructions & tube alike cages and ruffles which stress the fact that not only our visual appearance but also our mental wellbeeing should sparkle.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: These garments are one of the main pieces of the collection Bittersweet, which is a fusion of Prison and Barbie. The combination of the ruffles and tube a like constructions merged in jet black and pale pink symbolizes the contrast of bitter and sweet in a surrealistic way together with massive tube alike cages on the legs and arms, blacksmith head pieces as well as an iron skirt, but everything with a touch of sweetness. Various elements from both sides are elaborated equally. For example soft and light merino wool and heavy iron.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: At the back of the iron skirt is a hinge to open and slide in the circle. Then closed and fixed with strings holding on to the shoulder, covered under the middle ruffles left and right on the upper body. 2 pockets are hidden under the front pleats of the black dress. Objects 7cmx 9cm fit in there. The knitwear dress can be with and without the tube sleeves, easily taken off with the small string around the armhole. The single pieces can be worn separately so that the garments itself still keeps the values of comfort and function.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: My 3rd year collection for my Fashion Design studies in Florence/Italy at Polimoda which started in October 2016 and finished in mid June 2017 for my final revision.
It was showcased 2018 at New York Fashion Week, 2017 at Vancouver Fashion Week and at Finest Finest during London Fashion Week.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research has a contemporary and historical inspiration gained through books, internet and exhibitons in order to achieve an work of art in form of a garment spotting light on human's psychology. I experimented a lot with shape and volume to support the idea through the silhouette as well as through the colour. After creating the concept and the design the garments were sewn several times in fabric heavy cotton. Patterns & Draping as well as continuous fittings on models contributed to the appearance. Published internationally in diverse media.
CHALLENGE: The creative challenge was widely the sewing part as almost everything is made by me.
The materials especially the iron had to be adapted to physical neccessities of the human body in a comfortable way.

Through its clever combination of Prison and Barbie, it has managed to capture the essence of breaking free from mental constrictions, while also expressing the importance of mental well-being.
