DESIGN NAME: Fogila
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Environment Cleansing Floorlamp
INSPIRATION: Taking inspiration from 3 of the most vital elements of nature, the sun, air and leaves. The ideology of the design stems from the process of photosynthesis which uses the sun to create food for plants through leaves which absorbs harmful carbon dioxide and provides oxygen to sustain all life forms on our planet.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Photocatalysis is process that uses nano-particles that when activated by any light source and air it can clean the environment of toxins such as nitrogen dioxide and volatile compounds arsing from construction site. It also possess a deodorizing effect and is completely non-toxic to humans. The lamp is made from recycled steel and coated entirely with this treatment. During the day it uses natural daylight to clean your environment and during the night the LED light continues the process.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The enclosed remote will switch on/off the lamp as well as adjust the color range and dimmability of the lamp. Since the photocatalytic coating is activated via chemical process from natural element. There is no operation required.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project originally began in 2009 as just a standard lamp design. Through the years the design has changed many times and in 2015 we discover photocatalysis application and since have been adapting it into the design. The customization aspect of the design also started in 2015 as we want the lamp to suit any interior style and in 2017 we finally partnered with our collaborator to use the most advance version of this treatment on to the lamp with the final geometry of lamp completed in october 2017. The first prototype was completed in December 2017 and will go into full production at the end of 2018.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The lamp is made entirely out of recycled laser cut steel to retain our company motto of environmentalism. Working with our collaborating partners for over a year we have used the latest generation of Photocatalytic treatment that only needs light and natural air to activate its environment cleansing effect. The low voltage LED light tube is adjustable via phone app and remote and it dimmable as well as can change from cold light(4000k) to warm light (2700K).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Urbanization, is the word of our times. In 1950 only 30% of the world’s population lives in the city but it is projected that by 2050 over 70% of the global populations will be urban dwellers. With such rapid growth cities are faced with undaunting levels of pollution unheard of just a century ago. As architects and designers we are entering into a new era of environmental thinking that has to either help our planet, recycle some of our creations and consider the biosynthesis of humans with nature. Furniture has always been one of the most vibrant discipline in design as it is comparatively unlimited in its physical restriction thus leaving more leeway to push for innovation. Photocatalysis is a process that uses nano-particles and Tungsten Trioxide (WO3) to clean VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds). When exposed to any ultraviolet light source, such as the sun, the coating's oxidative property decomposes harmful organic substances such as microbes on its surface. In addition, the hydrophilic nature of the coating causes water that comes into contact to form an even layer, thereby allowing the dust and dirt that have accumulated on the surface to be washed away. These two properties of the coating create the "self-cleaning" effect. This can be done with any present interior/exterior light and air from natural wind or even air condition units, thus eliminating any direct exposure to UV rays. This specialized coating can be applied to any surface and is Non-toxic and Bio-degradable.
Our design, FOGLIA (meaning leaf in Italian) was an inspiration taken from nature where sunlight activates Photosynthesis through leaves creating its nutrition while plants itself absorbs Carbon Dioxide from Air and creates Oxygen to sustain all lifeforms on our planet. The LED light tubes as well as the structure of the lamp are all treated with this special photocatalytic mixture. During the day when FOGLIA is places near any natural light and air it will work to clean the surrounding environment while during the night when the light is switched on, the cleansing action will continue. The design is made entirely out of recycled cold forge laser cut steel. There are a series of screens that can be magnetically clicked onto the openings of the lamp thus giving the design more longevity when the user gets bored. All accessories are also photocatalytic treated thus increasing the environment cleaning of the design as the larger the surface area, the cleaning power is greater.
CHALLENGE: We have to wait for over 2 years before photocatalytic coating technology can be satisfactory to our use. This is because the first few generations of the coating needed UV light to work and since extensive UV exposure is harmful to humans, we needed something that has to work indoors and less dependent on just natural daylight. Also in the beginning most of this application can only work in exterior condition but we wanted a system that should work 24 hours a day in your home so with this latest technology, the lamp will clean the air during daylight and when switched on during the night it will continue the process. We also waited for LED light tube to mature into an integrated device that can adjust the strength of illumination as the stronger the light, the better the coating will clean the environment. The design also went through many revisions as we needed an aesthetic that, although modern, should be able suit any interior.
