PRIMARY FUNCTION: Inflatable Pillow
INSPIRATION: In recent years, napping has become increasingly popular. Research has pointed out productivity and health benefits and companies are jumping in to encourage naps in the workplace. The negative stigma long associated with napping is slowly being redefined and society is now more open than ever to casual naps. As designers ourselves, we often find ourselves pulling all-nighters at the studio. This was a problem space that resonated with us and we were motivated to work on it.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: How many times do we catch ourselves dozing off throughout the day? What if we could snooze comfortably, right there and then? The Aubergine Pillow is an inflatable pillow that plumps up generously in one puff, yet compacts small enough to bring comfort along on everyday adventures.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Aubergine Pillow promises to inflate effortlessly with just a single puff. By employing the Bernoulli Effect. When you blow a few inches away from the spout, the surrounding air is drawn into the spout as well, ensuring that the volume of air that goes into pillow is much greater than the volume of your breath. This translates into greater efficiency and ease when inflating the Aubergine Pillow.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was successfully funded on Kickstarter on 1st December 2016, reaching 450% of its original funding goals. Designed in Singapore and manufactured in China, it was finished in December 2017. The Aubergine Pillow has been featured on DesignTaxi, Core77, AsiaOne and various media outlets. It has also been exhibited at Singapore Design Week Future/Now 2017 and NUS DID Show 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: By combining 100% cotton with TPU, we were able to achieve the comfort and softness that users were looking for in a pillow. This allowed us to heat seal the materials together. In doing so, it also ensure that the pillow was airtight. For further streamlining of the manufacturing line, 90% of the pillow, from the dimple to the internal valve to the edges, was done through heat sealing.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: When fully inflated, the Aubergine Pillow comes to 383 mm (Width) x 140 mm (Depth) x 725 mm (Height). When packed, it compacts to a 200 mm (Height) x 32.5 mm (Radius)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: There is an abundance of options in the extremely crowded travel pillows market. However, nothing screams “tourist” like a travel pillow. To a casual napper, convenience and comfort are typically mutually exclusive, with the exception of inflatable pillows. However, inflatables bring additional problems such as slow inflation, dirty mouth valves, and squeaky noises. Users expect the convenience and comfort of an inflatable pillow, without the negatives.
CHALLENGE: How might we design a pillow that is comfortable, convenient and aspirational? We quickly translated our ideas into experienceable prototypes for discussion. We explored different methods of inflation, napping postures and shapes. Through exploration, we realised that a fully inflated surface was rather uncomfortable to rest on. Thus, we started exploring how we could introduce a dimple for a more comfortable rest.
