DESIGN NAME: Empathy
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Coin stash
INSPIRATION: Zakat, “that which purifies”, in Islam, is a form of alms-giving treated in Islam as a religious tax. The notion of Zakat is to provide to the poor and those living without means of livelihood and could not meet their basic needs. Islam is one of the world's largest religion but it is also one of the most woefully misunderstood religion as well. Empathy strives to break the boundaries and allow people from different culture to empathize with the good of Islam. I quote, 'Rarely can a response make something better. What makes something better is a connection. When a society turns away from empathy, it loses its soul. So the big problem is when we stop taking other people's pain into account, eventually someone somewhere will do the to us and we when we feel that we most need empathy, we won't get it.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As the name suggests, Empathy is a coin bank that strives to allow the user to empathize with those in need. Coins put in will be separated by a divider, into personal savings in the opaque area and the charitable amount in the glass dome. Once the space in the personal savings area is filled, every coin deposited will fall into the charitable area, suggesting that only once you have enough, then could you afford to provide more. This is inspired by the Muslim's culture of 'Zakat', which is to provide to the poor and those living without means livelihood and could not meet their basic needs.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: 1. Get some coins
2. Carefully put in the coins
3. Enjoy how the coins separate at a random chance
4. As the coins accumulate, more and more coins would fall over to the area in glass
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2017 in Singapore and finished in April 2017 in Singapore.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Firstly, a study and research was made to enter the bubble of understanding with regards to Islam. With that, the understanding of the 5 pillars of Islam came to light. Adapting and engaging with one of the 5 pillars, Zakat, I then came to understand and learn that Zakat, “that which purifies”, in Islam, is a form of alms-giving treated in Islam as a religious tax. The notion of Zakat is to provide to the poor and those living without means of livelihood and could not meet their basic needs.
How could we, in a form translate such a meaningful act of giving, into a tangible object?
A few objects were taken into considerations, e.g - shareable food, tablewares, etc. However, what caught my attention was, in my opinion, how we actually use a coin stash. It is just a container for us to dump excess coins and when we actually really need it, we would just smash it (back in the day) or just open them and extract whatever we have inside.
What about the essence of saving? With those savings, what about giving?
This then allowed me to tie back to the connection of giving as explained by the notion of Zakat, which is to help the less well to do.
Thus, the choice of using a glass bowl at the bottom allows the user to evidently see how much is actually designated to giving others, subconsciously transforming them to have more empathy towards the less well to do.
No matter how little it is, helping others can never be quantified.
CHALLENGE: Coming from a Buddhism background and being a Chinese, trying to break in and try to understand a whole new culture and religion is a huge and sensitive task. In order to commit and do objects/products that translate the essence of a religion requires research and empathy to their beliefs. I visited mosques, spoke to many Muslim people, trying to understand what they are going through, what they believe in and what does Islam truly mean to a Muslim.
