| DESIGN NAME: Ripple PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tomb INSPIRATION: In eastern culture, water is considered as a spiritual thing. This design uses water to build up the emotional connection between the deceased and the mourner in front of the tombstone. This poetic way of communication gives the mourner the interactive feedback, creating the feeling that the soul from the heaven is being connected and responding through the water. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design uses rippling water to build up the emotional connection between the deceased and the mourner. The strength of the water ripples depends on the pitch of the voice as the sensor can detect when the mourner is speaking. If the mourner is speaking in usual voice, the water ripples slowly with the rhythm; while the voice turns excited and becomes crying, the water will shiver quickly to respond to the mourner, just like the dear one in heaven responding the mourner through the splash. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: When a mourner comes to the tombstone, he/she adds water to the small pool. There is a sensor to recognize the human voice and trigger the vibrating device, which is connected with the sensor and fitted at the bottom of the pool to produce water ripples. The strength of the ripples depends on the pitch of the voice as the sensor can detect when the mourner is speaking. If the mourner is speaking in usual voice, the water ripples slowly with the rhythm; while the voice turns excited and becomes crying, the water will shiver quickly to respond to the mourner. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: To implement this design, a small pool is built on the base of the tombstone, where you can add water. On the tip of the pool, there is a sensor to recognize the human voice and trigger the vibrating device, which is connected with the sensor and fitted at the bottom of the pool to produce water ripples. The strength of the ripples depends on the pitch of the voice as the sensor can detect when the mourner is speaking. But the mourner can hardly have mutual communication with the deceased in traditional mourning practices. It is not effective to comfort emotions of mourners due to the lack of interaction between the mourner and the deceased. CHALLENGE: It is not easy to build eastern atmosphere with technological tomb. Finally, we find the rippling water to connect the mourner and the deceased.
