PRIMARY FUNCTION: Urban Renewal
INSPIRATION: The Urban Renewal Exploration Centre targets to a wide audience, ranging from primary and secondary students to local community with an objective to communicate the urban renewal efforts and their benefits. To translate the complex topics and diversified information to the public, high technology was adopted to present a real-life experience of dilapidated housing, mock ups and exhibitions to convey the information in a clear and orderly manner. The venue is also furnished with interactive multimedia games to add fun and allow the public to gain a deeper understanding of the topics.

The former one is dialogue friendly in design featuring multimedia facilities and various fun-based interactive multimedia games. Visitors experience the poor living environment of residents in old districts with the support of smart technology and gain hands-on urban renewal experience through playing the games and better understand the benefits that the projects have brought to the community. The activity room provides a stage and setting to facilitate the engagement activities.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Smart technology inspires visitors to understand and approach urban renewal issues from various perspectives and digital media allows easy updates. A systematic introduction of seven urban renewal projects is arranged. To control the flow of information, it is installed with the iBeacon-enabled E-tour technology, by which visitors can hold an iPad to obtain automatically feeded information while following the designated route for the tour so they understand the topics step by step and inspire them to think about the future development of the city before the end of tour.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A questionnaire survey is conducted via ipad for each visitor to evaluate the effectiveness of the exhibition. By statistics, there are 5,515 unguided visitors and 1,197 guided visitors while there are total 57 guided tours since the opening of UREC on 30 October 2017 to 21 February 2018. 95.8% of the respondents gave 4 or 5 for the satisfaction rate. The overall rating of satisfaction is 4.55 out of 5. 97% of the respondents said UREC can enable their understanding on urban renewal.
CHALLENGE: Urban Renewal Authority has implemented 69 projects benefitting some 40,000 people. Around 2,300 buildings have been benefitted from rehabilitation schemes and some 60 historical buildings have been preserved and revitalized. Their projects will be launched from time to time hence the design challenge is to design and build in equipment such that it can offer flexibility to accommodate updates, additions or alterations to the content of the projects easily and promptly without major cost implications.
