DESIGN NAME: Construct Fashion
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Fashion project
INSPIRATION: For inspiration to my project I've chosen the Art Deco style. I’m very much inspired by geometric forms which are the essence of Art Deco.
Most of my ideas come from interior and industrial designs as well as from architecture.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: My intention in this project is to give clothing a new character of objects and buildings by developing new patterns and using stiff synthetics textiles. In addition, I want to present innovative designs which demonstrate a precise combination of art and fashion. It merges an earlier design aesthetics with a new point of view which brings it to an outcome of an unusual design and fascinating fashion.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The audience might think that the garments resemble decorative objects, buildings etc', nevertheless they see the features garment and view it as an object designed as a clothing item. While viewing the garments on models the audience can really get the ambivalent of the stiff looking shapes made from soft textiles worn on a body.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was made during my final year of fashion design studies at Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, and it is my official final project. The duration of the whole process, from research to the final product was 8 months. Started at October 2016 and finished at June 2017 at Mazor, Israel.
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The core of the production is in the patterns. In order to turn my visions into practice I developed patterns that create the desirable volumes and silhouettes, and used several different synthetic fabrics, some of them I've stiffened.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Each garment is made from a big amount of pieces sewn to together. Most of the fabrics were stiff to begin with and the others were stiffened.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Art Deco was the most fashionable international design movement in modern art from 1925 until the 1940s. I chose to have a research which is mostly visual. Art Deco embraced all types of art, including crafts as well as fine arts. It was applied to decorative art like interior design, furniture, jewelry, textiles, fashion and industrial design, as well as to the applied art of architecture and the visual arts of painting, and graphics. The art deco style, which above all reflected modern technology, was characterized by smooth lines, geometric shapes, streamlined forms and bright, sometimes garish colors. Initially a luxury style (a reaction against the austerity imposed by World War I) employing costly materials like silver, crystal, ivory, jade and lacquer, after the Depression it also used cheaper and mass-produced materials like chrome, plastics, and other industrial items catering to the growing middle class taste for a design style that was elegant, glamorous and functional.
CHALLENGE: One of my difficulties was finding the fabrics which suit the sensation I wanted my garments to provide, I was looking for unique colors as well as stiff fabric to create the desired volumes. Another difficulty was the sewing, because as much as I needed the stiff fabric it was very complicated to sew the pieces together, because of the complicated patterns and the thickness.
