PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Mobile Cart

INSPIRATION:
As the popularity of Octopus Card for micro payment, citizens accumulate lots of spare coins at home. The project is a creative solution to encourage the public to channel back rarely use coins to circulation system, and minimizing the effort of minting new coins.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
This is the first of its kinds in the world, engaging two 10-tonnes vehicles equipped with automatic coin counting machines to serve the community in the neighborhood. The core strategy is to device a solution in view of the challenge of coin shortage in active circulation. Two coin collection carts are based on the concept of a mobile bank at your door step. The carts are parked at various districts to offer free coin deposit or exchange service to the community in the neighbourhood.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Customers put their spare coins in a basket tray to remove other objects and dirt. Then the customer service representatives will inspect the coins to filter out defect ones, in order to prevent damage to the coin counting machine. Coins are counted by the machine automatically with the amount calculated. Upon the customer confirmation, a receipt will be issued. Customers may choose to receive the equivalent amount in cash, debt to their Octopus card, or make donation to the Community Chest donation box.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in October 2014 and scheduled to locate in various districts around Hong Kong. These two carts are still serving to different communities for over 300 locations.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
Each Cart is tailored-made into customer area and highly secured area in compliance with bank security infrastructure. It runs either with external power supply or power generator, and allows ample natural light for energy saving. The cart is installed with TV screen and window panel to showcase the flow of service. Coin counting machines can count coins of mixed denominations together. Customers do not need to sort their coins by denomination beforehand. Upon the customer confirmation, a receipt will be issued. The cart has also installed an electrical wheelchair lift to cater the needs of physically challenged.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The circulation of coins in the past five years increased by 12%. In view of stable demand in the market, the HKMA has no intention to stop issuing coins. Since the launch of the Coin Collection Programme in October 2014, the two Coin Carts have completed 13 cycles of serving the 18 districts on 19 March 2017. The Carts had carried out 283,000 transactions, collecting 239 million coins with a total face value of HKD 294 million during the period. The collected coins are re-circulated to meet the demand. Furthermore, HKD 128,500 was donated to charity from Community Chest donation boxes in the carts by the end of 2016.

CHALLENGE:
The popularity of electronic payments has significantly reduced incidents of using coins. Many citizens kept spare coins at home, and have no incentive to exchange or deposit them at the banks with a fee charged. A significant portion of coins is kept at home has disrupted the effective circulation of coins in the local market. Coin shortage in active circulation has created a challenge to the government. Minting new coins is a very costly taking into account of materials and logistic. The Coin Collection Program which is a win-win solution to both government and the public.
