DESIGN NAME: Interactive Lightspace
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Exhibition Highlight
INSPIRATION: As part of the new brand communication of our client "ZKW Group" we developed the approach of letting the future of lighting in automotive being told by light itself. Interactive and immersive, to assure the messages resonate.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is a physical space equipped with advanced laser tracking technology which is actively tracing the position of people in it and also relative to each other. The storytelling of the content is happening on a highres led wall in front of the visitors. The ceiling consists of over 4700 led lights which are controlled separately in order to project on the floor. This massive "canvas of light" is acting as an immersive element of interactive storytelling in conjunction with the tracking system.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The lightspace is equipped with two laser tracking systems which are capable of tracking multiple persons within the lightspace. It acts as an interactive component in correlation to the content shown on a large led wall in front of it. By moving around in the lightspace, people can experience interactive use-cases in the field of intelligent light and its role in the future of mobility in a playful and immersive approach. A remote control provided further interactive options for the operator.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: IAA Pkw 2017 in Frankfurt in September 2017
FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: 96 led Panels each providing 49 singular led lights. All of them controlled by our application. 2 industrial laser range sensors to provide position tracking and therefore interactivity. Both elements building a interactive light space in fron of a led wall measuring 6.5 x 2.5 meters.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 6 x 4 metres of interactive lightspace

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The topic of our research was the role of light in a future of increasingly autonomous mobility systems. As it will be no longer necessary for autonomous vehicles to use light as a visual aid and indicator for the drivers, it will take an important role in communication between autonomous and analog traffic participants. How can we showcase intelligent use of light systems to increase safety and efficiency in modern mobility? We developed 9 striking and interactive scenarios around this topic.
CHALLENGE: Such a thing has never been done before. Multi-user position tracking coupled with the control of 96 led light panels, that are usually used at rock concerts, to create and interactive lightspace out of 4.704 individually controlled led lights to empower light to tell its own story was quite a challenge, technically as well as conceptionally. The team put a lot of thought into all the aspects of the whole idea. The finalization of the whole installation was only doable by having a test setup prior to the exhibition for over a week, which was identically to the final one.
