| DESIGN NAME: Interaction PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residence INSPIRATION: There was limited light source and cozy space around the house, thus we have removed the original RC staircase and installed an open stair with timber treads and steel structure. The natural sunlight shines through the windows that are located upstairs, and transmit through the glass walkway and the open staircase to the bottom floor to create a warm enjoyable environment. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This project involved the renovation of a 20 year old multi level apartment.The arrangement of the living room sofa, kitchen and dining area were altered to face centrality. These changes will increase the spaces available, allowing a better interaction between family and friends under one roof.This emphasis the idea of the bottom floor as a place for family bonding and entertainment whilst upstairs will be solely use for personal space and resting. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It was with great pleasure to receive a wonderful feedback from the owners a few weeks after settlement. The couple mentioned that their house has changed, the mood has changed! Comparing to the past where they would stay outside till late, they now understand the meaning of home, sweet home. They mentioned the new renovation in this house has boosted connection and relationship between family and friends. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The material and color coding were based on neuter texture. Using warm white colored wall, tiles, stone bench top, enamel plate as the core design, and pandomo cement floor to highlight the other timber cabinets. Moreover, we make use of different color furniture, as well as the owners own collection of colorful cast iron woks to elaborate the simple, lively and relaxing atmosphere. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 165 square meter TAGS: Interaction, Nature, Light, Cats RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This project involved the renovation of a 20 year old multi level apartment. After consulting and discussing with the owners, these are the things they wished to change and make this house into their dream home. As their works are quite stressful, they want their family home to deliver a relaxing living environment. The wife wishes to have a spacious kitchen with island so that she can prepare her delicacy without feeling suffocated by oil and smoke. While the husband wants an open living lounge that is capable to host a small party with family and friends. CHALLENGE: The moment when I walked into this space, all that I felt was discomfort. The deterioration of the material and the dullness of the color coding; the wall and stairs that were built in the position that blocks the natural light, limited storage space, out-dated facilities and water leakages. In my opinion it was not a pleasant space to live in. The insufficient space of the kitchen and living room has restricted the owners to prepare a decent meal, and the thought of inviting friends and family over was definitely out of the picture.
