DESIGN NAME: Traveling at Home
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential Apartment
INSPIRATION: The owner is a keen traveler who wishes to be abroad even when at home. So we take inspiration from his favorite destination, Paris. Naturally, the city’s symbol, the Eiffel Tower, becomes the design focus. Care is taken to not fill the apartment with just prints and displays of the tower - reducing the tower into a mere icon would imply a negligence to engage with the spatial qualities of the apartment and create the actual ambience of a home. Instead, abstractions from the tower form the design vocabulary, yielding two simple elements: lattice and illumination.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Walls in the living room and bathroom, ceilings, shelves, and even the railings forming the open closet in the bedroom all meet at angles, and the feature wall and sliding door in the living room are panels adhered together by strips of lattice-like metal. Recessed linear lights are also lattice-like in their angled orientation. Spotlights in the living room face outward at the walls, simulating the tower's light beams and creating a melodramatic mood. A monochromatic colour scheme further brings out the tower’s modern and chic presence.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The purpose of basing this design on the Eiffel Tower is to draw an emotional response from the occupants to revel in the memories of past journeys and the carefree state of mind when traveling. But the interaction is not a temporal one that one has in a hotel, where the sense of belonging and practical conveniences are often absent. Thus, extra care was taken to insert ample storage space, e.g. walk-in closet in the bedroom and shoe closet at the apartment entrance, but in an inconspicuous manner that would not interfere with the clean and chic aesthetics.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project was completed in October 2016 in Hong Kong.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The swirls in the marble finishing throughout conjure up Eiffel Tower's dazzling sight at night. Feature light fixtures are also chosen for their sparkling qualities. Working together with the lighting are reflective surfaces such as the laminated cabinet finishing in the kitchen.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 105 sq. m.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: As the owner is a frequent traveler, interactions could only happen during the five days per month that he is in Hong Kong. Our work is driven by a user-centric principal, so it was difficult for us to conduct sufficient research and develop a deep understanding of the owner’s needs and preferences to incorporate into the design. This put our capabilities to test in using the most up-to-date technology for conveying to the client our design concepts, the expansiveness of the apartment after moving partition walls to enlarge the bedroom, and the feel of upholstery and finishings to be used.
CHALLENGE: The ceiling is relatively low at 2.6 metres. Panels of velvet and woven upholstery are used on the living room walls and the master bedroom headboard; their differing textures and geometric shapes contribute to building up the sense of depth in an otherwise compressed space.
