| DESIGN NAME: Tolumi PRIMARY FUNCTION: Folding dressing table INSPIRATION: When it comes to make up, the most important thing is light. Before starting my work on this project I have been underestimating it terribly. I did not even realize how much I could improve the way I look by doing my make up in the right light. But what if you do not want all your room interior design to depend on makeup. That was the moment when idea of Tolumi appeared. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The most important thing about Tolumi is flexibility. It moves as you like and it changes function according to your needs. Normally it is a small table and stands peacefully in its place not trying to dominate the space. You can move it around as you please, using it for coffee or a book. Only when you wish to do your make up you unfold it into a dressing table, place it following the right light depending on the time of the day or room layout, put on accessories of your choice and enjoy. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Main goal for the project was to create a piece of furniture that is suitable for every kind of space and yet gives you the possibility to use day light for make up. The user can fold it pressing a small button which turns Tolumi into coffee table which also can be moved around. It gives you the chance to follow the light if it is your living room that has the best exposition than that is the place where you keep your Tolumi, only unfolding it when necessary by simply pushing the table up. User can adjust the angle for the table, place accessories and comfortably sit on the cushion. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January and is still in progress. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The presented item is made out of cherry wood and grey fabric to match the interior it is placed in but it can be anything you like. Mechanism for unfolding and folding is similar to umbrella. You just pull the table up to unfold and push it down by pressing the small button. Under it has small wheels to move frilly. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Height - 450mm, Diameter - 450mm TAGS: dressing table, table, fold, make-up, coffe, decorate, beauty, light RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research is still in progress I am working on another version of Tolumi with additional functions. I would like to add a possibility to open the cushion to give user additional space for hiding objects. Another thing is integrating the table top with opening mirror and a space to place the accessories. CHALLENGE: I find two things the most challenging. First is a mechanism to fold and unfold the table, which on one hand works smoothly, but at the same time is stable when unfolded. It was essential to ensure that once you put your mirror and accessories on it, the table would not swing or fold itself unexpectedly. The other thing are details. I believe, especially with this kind of furniture, dedicated to enhance beauty, everything should be done with precision in order to give you pleasure of looking at and using table. It was especially about the edge connecting horizontal and vertical part of fabric and the edge surrounding the hiding leg.
