PRIMARY FUNCTION: Hotel
INSPIRATION: Inspirations of the project are the culture and hospitality of Kyoto, the increasing number of foreign tourists, the unique contexts of the site where no other lodging facilities existed, the local art and its community.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The initial opening of the hotel and apartment was in 2011 aiming to become a hub for contemporary art and culture of Kyoto. Its entrance through a gallery space was unique and had become significantly recognized in the industry. 2016 was its renewal opening year with 67 new guest rooms and more presence of art by collaborating with artists in creating conceptual rooms and adding a production studio for an artist in residence program. The hotel theme is Art Fair 365 Days A Year. All art pieces in the hotel are for sale, attracting various kinds of visitors from all over the world.

CHALLENGE: A Gallery Hotel Full Of Art
The 1st floor and the 6th floor feature concept guestrooms that integrate artwork and interior design into gallery-like spaces that also convey the world view of their designers. Conceptual rooms are designed by sculptor Kohei Nawa, photographer Mika Ninagawa, contemporary artist Kenji Yanobe and other well-known Japanese artists. In addition, over 200 pieces of artwork by 70 artists are displayed in the halls, the guestrooms, and common spaces. A platform of self expression for young artists, as the hotel provides a newly added studio space and organizes an artist-in-residence program. This means that there is an artist present, and artwork is created inside the hotel.
