RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Background:
The social isolation situation is worse for Chinese seniors in New York cause even they live in Chinese community they live with Chinese who have different dialects, different values due to the different background so they think they don`t have any common interests.
Method:
Stakeholders interview, system thinking. By interviewing all related stakeholders like the managers in senior centers, isolated senior`s families, the people in government, the doctors in medical school. And narrowing down the target audience to the late Chinese immigrants as well as the specific problem which is the disconnection between late Chinese immigrants and early Chinese immigrants.
Field interviews and shadowing. To get different perspectives and build different mental models, tried to understand the reasons for the disconnection. And I also did shadowing for three isolated seniors to synthesis their life patterns.
Test hypothesis, verify the hypothesis. I held three workshops to verify my hypothesis and adjust design based on the feedback from the workshops.
Participants: more than thirty interviewees.
Result and insight: The biggest insight is many Chinese isolated seniors believe that they have nothing in common, but actually their behaviors disprove the belief. They are love for grandkids, missing their homeland, regularly reading the Chinese newspaper, huge love for good shopping deals.
Hypothesis: My hypothesis is they can be connected to their common interests.
CHALLENGE: Research Challenge: In research part, the biggest challenge is since those people are isolated, they are invisible in New York, it is so difficult to find them and do the interviews. My solution was doing an observation for them. I found that many Chinese seniors love to go to the park, and those isolated seniors always sit by themselves. When I approached them and talked with them, I realized that they are exactly the group I'm looking for.
Creative challenge: For the design of community newspaper, I'm worried about the privacy leaking.
