DESIGN NAME: Wuhan Wushang Mall Cinema 9F
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Cinema
INSPIRATION: With the advancement of technology, movie screening in cinemas has been digitalized, piles of film reels are no longer stacked up in screening rooms. In the old days, films are stored in film reels, movies are screened in cinemas by running reels in projectors. The designers adopted the rotating motion of the reels as the theme of this cinema, captured and portrayed in an impactful and modernistic movie-viewing environment.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The designers adopted the rotating motion of film reels as the theme of this cinema. Huge round plates with 2.8 meter diameter are arranged across the ceiling to form an enormous ceiling feature. The wood pattern and the lighting effect together create a sense of movement and suspension, resembling film reels frozen in the midst of rotation. In the auditorium, ceiling and walls are covered with small brown discs made from sound absorbing panels, as if film reels flying towards the audience.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: It was hard to suspend the round plates with 2.8m diameter on the ceiling. The designers added special structure inside the plates, allowing them to hide wires inside the plates, securely hanging the huge plates while creating an illusion that these plates are very light. Local fire regulations have restricted the choice of materials, the designers used aluminium panels painted with wood pattern to replace real wood. Many mock ups were made to produce a natural and appealing wood pattern.
