DESIGN NAME: Bloom at Night
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Visual Merchandising
INSPIRATION: Bloom at night, this was the distinctive and essential inspiration for the design, the Jasmine flower being a key ingredient in the product launch, of which blooms only in the night time under the light of the moon. Jasmine is the essence of power and romance, which had to be put across in a 3-dimensional form. Taking this as a clear and direct influence, to bring the strength and power yet fragility and delicacy of the flower into the design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: There was a need for creating very delicate ornamental flowers, on a large scale, but to keep the manufacture relevant to the brand and their ethos. SLS 3D printing was a very unusual method of production and pushing boundaries in technology within the industry of retail window displays. Using the nylon printing techniques ensure the to keep the fine details and slightly powdery finish replicating the delicate and soft beauty of the Jasmine flower.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: It was paramount to ensure the flowers looked delicate and realistic, so instead of rolling out one flower shape, 4 different designs were created in 3D artworks, in 4 different sizes, to ensure any floral display looks natural and elegant, rather than mass produced.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Originally designed for a 2 week installation for Saks Fifth Avenue New York, the success of the flower has become a staple in the brand identity of the au Parfum and most recently the au Blanche Parfum displays which can be found in retail outlets and department stores world-wide.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The client’s fashion house is based hugely on couture and craftsmanship, which were important to showcase and build upon. This was the basis for our experimentation process working by hand in sugar and porcelain paste, playing with shapes, textures and form, to create a replica of a real flower, which could be 3D scanned and reproduced on a larger scale.
CHALLENGE: To replicate the delicacy of the jasmine flower, in a permanent structure was very challenging to get all the fine details and imitate the fragile nature. Firstly, having formed the flower from porcelain and sugar paste by an artisanal cake decorator, but realising this method of production would be to arduous for nearly 1000 flowers meant having to drastically find an alternate solution. Scanning the flower and having a 3D artwork produced, left us free to adjust and create 8 different shapes and sizes of flower produced in 3D print. This in turn made the display look unique and hand crafted, yet using forefront technology to accomplish this.
