DESIGN NAME: Pencil Possibilities, Hermes
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Window VM Display
INSPIRATION: Le Sens des Objets – The meaning of the object was the brief. Taking inspiration from a very banal, every day object which has a common place and association with the majority audience, the Pencil. Dating back through history and time, the instrument can evoke emotion thinking back olden times, or childhood, colouring books, drawing, note taking, letter writing making it possible for the mass audience to have connection with the window display.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Immersing the viewer in the story of the moment. The design was displayed in 12 Travel Retail boutiques across Europe and America, and 2 stand-alone store in Malaysia spread across 32 windows.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: From a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 6 windows per boutique amassed across a multitude of locations, the design therefore had to be flexible and adaptable to space and site specification, as well as versatile for market audience and product display. Using impactful colours with oversized elements, the design managed to capture the playful nature and affection of the viewer.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Each window display was 3D modelled and placed in situ to ensure the space was appropriated amassed in each location. Fire restrictions in some Airports limited the use of materials to Metal, Glass, Stone and Class B1 Fire rated MDF. Adapting the design to be produced with the same look and effect of other windows meant producing everything in heat formed metal or MDF. Each prop for each window was handcrafted to fit the location it was showcased.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Care and attention was paid to every individual design and window. Not only was it paramount that each window display was unique to its location, but that it told a chapter of the full story in the global display of each location. Each window was developed to attract, engage and entertain the viewer, whilst highlighting the brand products as hero elements to entice the audience.
CHALLENGE: Every location and market holds a different clientele, so the challenge was to engage and evoke emotion in all locations with each target audience. Being the installation were primarily within Travel Retail Airport units, there were many restrictions on material use to comply with very strict fire regulations, needing to be approved and signed off, limiting vastly the techniques and production methods within a modest budget.
