| DESIGN NAME: iGate PRIMARY FUNCTION: Tunnel access structure INSPIRATION: Popular talismans the "Blue Eye" and Fatima's hand, which bring turkish people happiness and well-being, are the inspiration for the concept of the architectural decorative lighting. Following the design of the decorative lighting the architectural concept was de-veloped in which the main theme is the arch, a historic building element which extends through the world and in particular the turkish history of architecture. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A complex steel structure was proposed as the tunnel access, not just an entrance portal as with most other proposals. The architecture of this access, in a symbolic and functional sense consists of 80 interlocking arches, with different radii and inclination placed in series, whose each developed length reaches 30m and passes over four car lanes with the supports span of 20 m. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: With the state-of-the-art technology and advanced engineering involved in this integrated project connecting continents, the Eurasia Tunnel serves as a 'Fast', 'Economic' PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in February 2011. and the tunnel opened in December 2016. |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Steel structure mesh SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 250m European side, 5400m Tunnel, 150m Asian side TAGS: tunnel, entrance structure, structural art, lighting design, infrastructure RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Given the importance of the project, investors wanted to mark the entrances and exits of the tunnel, and design the architectural decorative lighting. Popular talismans the "Blue Eye" and Fatima's hand are the inspiration for the concept of the architectural decorative lighting. Following the design of the decorative lighting the architectural concept was developed in which the main theme is the arch, a historic building element which extends through the world and in particular the turkish history of architecture. A complex, light and transparent steel structure was proposed as the tunnel access, not just an entrance portal as with most other proposals, thus the structure doesn’t obstruct the view of the Historic Peninsula. CHALLENGE: The entire process from the concept design to the shop drawings was controlled and developed through parametric design to enable greater freedom of searching and selecting the interweaving structure in the conceptual design stage, and greater precision and control in the final phase of the project.
