DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Vortex

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Jewellery Collection

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration comes from the abstract lines of modern architecture, especially the contrast between the straight lines and curves, because it captures the essence of the balance between the two. We also studied the philosophy of Chinese Ying and Yang as reference to introduce fluid lines to bridge and form the jewellery, and therefore achieve the harmony shape. The pieces not only compliment the body when worn, but also can be seen as individual art sculptures on their own.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
With the luxury jewellery market filled with designs for women, we spotted the gap between the lack of options for male jewellery and want to make a collection suitable for this target audience. With that being said, this collection is modern in design which enables the jewellery pieces to be seen on both genders. The forms celebrate individual identity and modern sense of art and design, and the variety of the collection allows them to be matched with outfits accordingly.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Besides the option to pair the jewellery to the wearers’ outfits according to their preferences, the collection also offers the opportunity to let the wearer to customise the materials used in the jeweller pieces. With various choices of material and colour combinations, the collection widens its range in jewellery and possibilities.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in July 2017 and finished in September 2017 in London.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The jewellery pieces are modelled with computer software like Rhino and Maya, printed out with 3D printing technology, then casted into different materials and treated with different surface finishing. Mask: Carbon Fibre, Brass, 18ct Gold Plated Ring: Silver, Black rhodium plated, Sand blast surface treatment Long Ring: Silver, Black rhodium plated, Sand blast surface treatment Brooch: Silver, Black rhodium plated, Sand blast surface treatment Cuff: Silver, Black rhodium plated, Sand blast surface treatment

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The research and visual references for this collection focus on contemporary architectures and the Sophisticated geometric shapes used within, in order to create combinations of sensual lines to form the jewellery pieces. Market research is also an important part that is taken into consideration. By gaining a fully understanding of the current market and basic measurement of the body parts, we are able to create a collection of jewellery pieces that are expressive art objects, but still wearable.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge that we encountered during the design process is to test and experiment back and forth, in order to pursue unique shape of the forms as well as functionality at the same time.
