DESIGN NAME: Jojyan
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Chair
INSPIRATION: It all started by the Persian rug and traditional available instruments used in west Iran.
The inspiration was to create a type of chair for the time today, by using a rug and new method for using that. The result is a new chair to enhance and support the traditional rug workshops.
I was also inspired by one of the stories in the -One Thousand and One Nights- relating how to the Prince travels in India by a magic flying rug.
Jojyan means leaning back & refreshing after work in Kurdish.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The shape of the chair resembles the flying rug or a butterfly. Beside being a static object, it gives us the impression of hovering by the hanging rug on the legs. It provides a new visual experience from different viewpoints. The seat surface is a handmade rug. Natural material & traditional color & popular figures are applied in the rug. This design offers the opportunity to recreate and support traditional workshops.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: various ways of interaction, such as seating, leaning, bending over and so on is possible.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2017 in India and and finished in 2017 after several design developments. Project was exhibited first time in December 2017 in Tehran, at the Persian design festival.

The structure holds itself. It gives stability and at the same time strengthens its structure and lightness. The rug is fixed with Simple Skirt-Hooks.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: first of all, I found a lot of Traditional rug workshops that could not harmonize themselves to the new product trends & markets. I decided to create an interesting and modern use of rug, accordingly I was aimed at rug and did not overload it with trendy features. I have done some research in nomads and paper folding techniques. I always experimented with the paper folding techniques in a similar way.
The final product was designed so that it could be packed and easily shipped with less effort for the user to attach the leg frame and use.
CHALLENGE: Only two main materials -hand maded rug and metal-are used. How to joint the rug and the legs to create comfortable, strong and flexible chair while remaining good-looking appearance is the key issue.
To create an airy and natural effect I had to hide supporters and screws. Besides, I had to find the ideal size of rug and place it on the legs. I needed to find the balance between the different shapes and the nature of the rug and legs to reach its harmony.
I like to make experiments with a materials in order to foster new discoveries and challenges, in this project I simply took rug and I started experimenting with it.
