DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Sanbe

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Table

INSPIRATION:
Our motivation when we designed the table Sanbe, as well as the rest of the pieces that we have created, was to succeed in providing it with voice and its own personality. Using manual tools and noble raw materials against a world immerse in an industrial approach, we expect objects to stop being just objects and become a part of our life. We want them to tell stories through its durability, its quality and the hands behind their creation, adding them the value of exclusiveness, since no two pieces are identical.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The table Sanbe combines elements of Nordic design from the 50s and basic guiding elements from Japanese art, such as simplicity or balance. The thickness of the entire piece highlights the beauty of wood, combined with an edging that emphasizes the drawing created by its grains. The fusion between traditional cabinet-making knowledge and contemporary design allows us to travel to the past, while looking into the future.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
We wanted to design a versatile coffee table with different points of view. In order to create a table that allowed us playing with all these premises, we decided to elaborate a triangular table, where each side has a different measure. Its versatility becomes apparent when we can rotate the table depending on the needs or the space where we want to use it.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
Sanbe was designed and created in 2014 in Galicia, Spain. The entire process from its initial design to its final creation took 6 months, from the beginning of March to the end of September, 2014

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The table Sanbe is entirely made from solid wood, through a craft production process where manual work is as important as the knowledge of the raw material. We work with chestnut, oak, walnut and cherry solid wood that is 4 cm thick, treated with products that preserve the material’s natural colour and touch. The whole assembly is done through cabinet-making. We use a splined joint for the boards, while we make use of the mortise-and-tenon joint for the legs.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
Width 1260 mm x Depth 920 mm x Height 420 mm Handicraft production. Material: Chestnut, oak, cherry or walnut solid wood.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
The study behind the manufacturing of handcrafted pieces made from solid wood involves a great work. Achieving a lifelong product requires determination for choosing the best assembles that will provide the durability and resistance required. The study of the raw material, the wood’s torsion forces, thickness, assembles…everything is important. To achieve the final result, a long process of layout and prototyping was needed with the aim of obtaining a product cared down to the finest detail. down to the finest detail.

CHALLENGE:
We believe that handcrafted furniture require a detailed study and a multidisciplinary work. Since wood is a very valuable material, its particular movement needs to be understood and respected. Keeping this in mind at all times was the most important to us.
