DESIGN NAME: Enso
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Table
INSPIRATION: Inspiration is found in abstract minimalism and the 3D effect of these rounded shapes used in an interior setting. The simple, elegant shapes compose different abstract images from each angle. The aim is to spark curiosity and raise questions about its construction and balance. The spectator will likely only understand the object after looking at it from several dfferent angles.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Enso Table has a unique balance, found by the meticulously placed and shaped vertical parts forming the legs. The minimalist composition of the three shaped pieces of wood form a balanced table, while keeping its function. Another unique feature is the visual effect of the two legs, which effect changes when looking at the table from different angles. The Enso Table is designed to spark people's curiosity about its construction and to encourage people to inspect the table from different angles. This creates a dynamic effect in the interior space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The consumer or interior decorator is triggered to consider the different viewpoints in the space, as each angle of the Enso Table will provide a different composition of shapes. When placed in an interior the Enso Table creates interaction with the curious viewer who wants to understand its construction and balance.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The research and development phase started in December 2016 and the final product was ready in July 2017. The design was exhibited at the Dutch Design Week Eindhoven in October 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Minimalist compositions were sought in abstract and minimalist art and brought to the 3D world by shaping a functional table. The conventional table was broken down to only the necessary functional elements. A 3D study was conducted into the possible 3 minimalist shaped compositions and how to find the necessary balance and visual harmony. The final choice of material and technique was birch plywood with a top layer of oak and walnut veneer to provide for the necessary sturdiness, efficiency in production through cnc milling of sheets and the sustainable fsc and pefc certificates.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Two options:
Diameter: 57cm. Height: 38cm
Diameter: 68cm. Height: 45cm
As for packaging, the aim was again to provide for a sustainable solution. The protective layers are made of corrugated cardboard. Inspired by the Japanese packaging style, the package is wrapped in white light weight Kraft Paper, carefully folded as a gift wrap with a branded round sticker.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Abstract and minimalist art and composition was studied. Minimalist compositions were sought to shape a functional table that sparks curiosity. A paper model study was conducted for the possible 3 minimalist shaped balanced compositions with visual harmony. When modelling and rounding up the edges of the legs, the 'tunnel perspective' was achieved, visible from only several angles. Various materials were tested and the final choice of material and technique was birch plywood with a top layer of oak and walnut veneer.
CHALLENGE: The main challenge was to balance the table top on the two legs, while maintaining the visual effect from the different angles and maintaining a clean, well balanced structure. Further, the strength of the structure was of significant importance, and ultimately achieved by milling notches in the bottom of the table top.
