DESIGN NAME: Haji Villa
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: The inspiration for this project was trying to stylize the space based on a contextual theme that had to be derived. We have never worked on this syle of rustic design before. A lot of research was done on various elements that had to come together to create this space.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project is a 5 bedroom villa including plunge pool, multi-purpose court, party lawn, theatre room, open air jacuzzi, basement and terraces, situated in Lonavala, India. The project is designed in keeping with local climate conditions, local rules and is low maintenance as it is a weekend home. We decided to take on a rustic yet modern approach to the project. Idea was to create warmth and a space with rustic texture built on a compact plot size of 5000 sq. ft.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: An entire master plan was worked out to determine where multi-purpose court, entrance, swimming pool and party lawn would be situated. Accordingly structures were developed for leisure amenities and planned. The spaces had to be inter-worked where in all social spaces could be used by women without neighbors trying to look into their spaces. Hence the pool was inserted near the main villa and screened off with a vertical green wall. The lawn was engulfed by the amenities building and the bungalow. As a result a lot of privacy was created through this planning which also gave relief to the adjoining buildings.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in January 2016 and finished in January 2017 in Lonavala, India.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Use of simple materials like basalt, kota, flamed granite for the exterior and luxurious/warm materials like wood, wall cladding, marble and rugs. The use of linen and cotton fabrics create an earthiness in keeping with the rustic theme. Wooden glo panels and metal bowls create an interesting focal point. The colour of the building has been kept pristine white with few offsets of pale grey. The furniture is simplistic modern using mainly wood. Flamed granite, basalt and stone give a contemporary yet rustic flavor to the home. Customised furniture creates an uncluttered and low maintenance second home.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: The entire plot is 5000 Sq.Ft.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: A rustic yet modern approach was adopted for the project. An entire master plan was worked out to determine where multi-purpose court, entrance, swimming pool and party lawn would be situated. The spaces had to be inter-worked where in all social spaces could be used by women without invasion to their privacy. The pool was inserted near the main villa and screened with a vertical green wall. Wood, stone industrial light fixtures, matte flooring were used as the guiding factors while creating the theme. Linen and cotton fabrics created the earthiness that was required to create the rustic texture. Bottle green, maroon, yellow ochre, deep orange, aqua green with hints of beige and grey helped in creating the vibrancy within the spaces.
CHALLENGE: The challenges faced while completing this project were climate and logistics.
During heavy rainfall most of the outdoor work was not possible. So temporary sheds were created for the workers to complete the outdoor work since the timeline was short.
Also logistics of supplying material furniture lights artifacts from Mumbai to Lonavala was another challenge we faced.
