| DESIGN NAME: Cabin R PRIMARY FUNCTION: Travel Bag INSPIRATION: My inspiration for this product came from an unfortunate personal experience of having my wedding ring stolen during a trip. Someone must have gone through my bag when I was sleeping. I later found out that plane theft does actually happen quite often and has been rising in the past few years. Therefore, I set out to design a travel security bag that not only secures my belongings, but also give me peace of mind while traveling. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: CabinR is a series of two anti-theft travel bags (1 messenger bag and 1 backpack). It is the world's first travel bags with electronic anti-theft technology that sound an alarm if being tampered with. Besides giving travelers peace of mind, the travel bags have many other innovative features such as a magnetic headphone dock plate and a luggage handle strap. The security feature can be physically detached to form of a security blanket that can be used separately to secure any type of bag. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To turn on security, simply press and hold the button for 2 seconds. Then activate it with the unique RFID key card. After 30 seconds, the security system will arm itself and continuously monitor your personal belongings. To disarm the security system, simply place the key card on top of the device. The device can be charged using a USB cable. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in August 2015 in Hong Kong and finished in September 2017 in Hong Kong |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: We designed the messenger bag and the backpack to seamlessly mate with the anti-theft security blanket that we've invented. The security blanket is a soft material with multiple circuit boards inside. These circuit boards include multiple highly sensitive sensors to detect movement and orientation of the different parts of the blanket. While in use, normal movement of the bag won't trigger the alarm. But if the blanket is moved in a way that suggests theft activity, a loud alarm will sound. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Backpack: Width 300mm x Depth 220mm x Height 520mm Messenger Bag: Width 410mm x Depth 140mm x Height 270mm TAGS: CabinR, TravelSecurity, AntiTheft, MessengerBag, Backpack RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Many cycles of prototypes of both the travel bags and underlying technology was created and refined through focus groups and user beta-testing. CHALLENGE: The hardest part of the project is coming up with two travel bag designs that not only look aesthetically great, but also function well with our underlying anti-theft technology. We created countless prototypes of both the travel bags and the anti-theft security blanket in order to integrate our technology seamlessly into the two travel bags.
