DESIGN NAME: Farfalle
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Ring
INSPIRATION: The inspiration of this farfalle ring came from a scene when I had dinner with friends. Farfalle, commonly known as bow-tie pasta, is an ingredient that we often use. The pasta that we shared at the dinner table looked like jewels to me. Then, the bow-tie shape brought me a desire to express the joyous mood at the scene. Hence, I came to reinterpret the beauty of solid metal by adopting the familiar but charming appearance of farfalle.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: This design is inspired by farfalle, a cooking ingredient that we often encounter in everyday life, and everyone can easily and intimately approach it through familiar forms. Farfalle made of metal can be recognized at once and provides visual pleasure through reinventing with a ring that is not a cooking material. The bow-tie ring is fascinating with elegance and wit.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: One of the advantages of this unique shape is to give you an easy but exciting addition on fashion in daily life. All that you should do to complete your fashion is simply to choose the right size of ring for you. This product also comes with different sizes, providing a broader selection of the rings. The final touches of golden texture and color on the ornaments to make them look like real butterfly pasta.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: This project started in January 2009, in Seoul. A month later, in February 2009, it was displayed at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. At the time, the MoMA Retail was proceeding the Destination Project to discover new artists in the world and introduce their innovative designs. My work was selected as one of representative designs from Seoul, and joined the exhibit in New York, Korean and Japan. Later, it was also presented at 2011 Design Korea and the Asia Top Gallery Hotel Fair (AHAF).

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: This study stemmed from interest in objects around me. Each of the objects in daily life has its own role and value, and it can make our lives richer depending on how we use it. This is why we need to appreciate the values of things around us. As for the technical process, I created a mock-up using real pasta to reinterpret our daily life on the farfalle ring. Then, I made the metal casting of the pasta for consistent quality.
CHALLENGE: One of the most challenging parts in the process was to express the bow-tie shape of farfalle as it was. To represent the real shape, the original form was created using wax carving skills, and the metal casting technique was adopted for the first modelling. The sillicon mold was expected to be helpful for mass production as well as for consistency in quality.
