| DESIGN NAME: The Language of Flowers Collection PRIMARY FUNCTION: Print Design Collection INSPIRATION: The language of Flower prints were inspired by love, Victorian history, with a 60s and 70s colourful twist The language of flowers was developed into popular art by the Victorians in Great Britain, who expressed meaning in the colour and arrangement of the flowers as well as the choice of species This was a source of great amusement and relief to many in the days when codes of courtship were rigid, their reticence almost contrived. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: A set of Screen-print designs with a mix of different flowers, including the Rose, the Forget-Me-Not, and the Passion Flower The prints are for a collection of fashion garments and accessories OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Print Collection will be applied to garments for the Bianca Elgar clothing brand. Each print is designed with the accompanying garment in mind, to maximise coverage and aesthetic. The garments are designed to be worn in a variety of ways, to use the prints effectively and allow for many different ways to position the garment to the wearer’s taste. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The designs, once drafted in pen and ink, are migrated to the stencil format. Once the multiple layers of the design are fully templated, their forms are transferred individually to silk screen panels by a Photo-sensitive emulsion process. Drawing ink over the reverse of the design by “flood stroke” the designs are built up layer by layer. We repeat this process until all the designs are positioned and coloured to satisfaction. Once quality controlled, the designs are then scanned, scaled, edited and repeated into several patterns and arrangements with creative software. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Thanks to the analogue process used to create the designs, each flower symbol has many subtle variations in colour and a shape. TAGS: Silk, Screen, Print, Fashion, Flowers, Floral, scarf, accessories, clothing RESEARCH ABSTRACT: My inspiration was taken in part from research into the floor designs of the Sheikh Zaved Mosque in Abu Dhabi, by Kevin Dean and the Victorian Era concept of The Language of Flowers, whereby people would use flowers rather than words to express their innermost thoughts and feelings. During the implementation of these into a modernised concept into my work, they naturally fell towards the 1960s-70s bold and bright Pop-Art “Flower Power” form that they currently exhibit. The collections are inspired by her love for creativity, the expression of individuality and a passion for high-quality British craftsmanship. Her range comprises simple, adaptable clothing; an extensive scarf collection; and Carissa - a selection of modular acrylic jewellery, to complement and complete the narrative. These lightweight, versatile pieces are all designed and made in the UK. The scarf range, including the innovative and award-winning Three-Sided Skinny and her unique Tube Tops, use only the finest quality silk and Bianca’s designs are all created through the silkscreen process. |
