DESIGN NAME: Sotavento
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Functional art entrance table
INSPIRATION: Sotavento means downwind on nautical terms. Resilience, commitment and strength are associated to sailing; these characteristics are the main inspiration for this unique Art and Design custom design.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: It is a two piece Art and Design object that provides flexibility for today’s multifunctional spaces. The composition is defined by a smooth main wood platform and a dynamic mobile steel secondary table. Under artistic appreciation, the composition’s shapes, colors and strengths, are well balanced and integrated. Individually, each piece emphasizes its uniqueness. The main wood form is elegant, smooth, and static. The secondary metal form is red, lively and dynamic.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Art work combined Wood and Metal into one composition. It required experts on the two areas working side by side. The piece was built from inside out since the tolerances between both of the pieces were too high, increasing the chances of missing the fit for mm. The inside metal piece was built first, and then the woodworking master builder tailored the outside piece.

CHALLENGE: The main challenges were to ensure the moving section could slide in and out of the wood shell with out major effort from the user. Aesthetically both elements most work as one as well as independently. The composition could not show any clues about being two objects in one.
