DESIGN NAME: Guftaguu
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Adaptive Seating
INSPIRATION: The design is inspired by the multitude of interactions that take place between people and in response to that is imbued with fluidity and adaptability in composition. Like fallen leaves from a tree, 'Guftaguu' captures the exuberance of such fleeting moments through an adaptive design that explores permutations through fluidity in form and movement and is a result of constant investigation and experimentation at the firm with interactive designs that bring joy to its users.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Predominantly envisioned for public space, the 'Guftaguu" (Interaction) seating system's introvert and extrovert compositions mimic the organic essence of conversation; with oneself, between friends or in a chance encounter with a stranger. The three rotating seats, each with two wooden discs, allow for a wide range of configurations, resulting in multiple types of interactions between its users, with a desire to enquire into the interplay between people, objects and space.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Most public spaces contain static furniture, often in the form of benches, that provide limited use and also limit the way we interact with other users. The seating system proposed contains three seats that can be manually rotated 360 degrees horizontally in both directions and can allows its users to not only face multiple directions but also to interact with each other in multiple ways.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started at the design studio in Lahore, Pakistan in Autumn 2016 (the fallen leaves during the season serving as inspiration). The first three months were spent on the design phase, with the first prototype produced in December 2016. Following a few design modifications to ensure durability, strength and comfort, the final design was produced in March 2017.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The initial investigation of the design was done is 3d CAD software in order to ensure the optimum distances between seats as well as the locations of the pivots to produce the maximum amount of contrast between the open and closed configurations. The purpose for this was to provide the maximum amount of flexibility to the user, by providing the maximum amount of physical change within the seating system. The material palette was restricted to powder coated steel and varnished wood, keeping the visual focus on the form.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Due to the adaptive nature of the design, the depth and width keep changing, depending on the configuration of the seats. However looking at the two extreme configurations, the dimensions are as follows:
Open Configuration: W 2185mm X D 1140mm X H 445mm
Closed Configuration: W 1470mm X D 660mm X H 445mm

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The research in the office has focused on adaptive and interactive designs that convey a sense of fluidity in form as well as movement. The Guftaguu seating system addresses this issue with regards to public space and furniture. Design research relied on various 3d CAD softwares as tools for design development. Research was also carried out on various systems that allowed for fluid movement while maintaining strength and durability as well as structural stability.
CHALLENGE: In the design process, the hardest part was to be able to study and understand the possibilities as well as the limitations that the adaptive system allowed. The desire was to keep the design as visually light as possible, thus posing another challenge with regards to strength and stability. The design of the seating system had to also respect the construction techniques and technology available in Pakistan to ensure that the design was viable for the public domain.
