DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Bam Bam

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Restaurant

INSPIRATION:
The inspiration for this design came from the desire to create a theatrical Vietnamese-Cajun beer garden in the new C North Terminal in IAH Airport.

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Bam Bam sits in the center of IAH’s bustling new C North terminal. This 70 seat Vietnamese-Cajun beer garden features a long, continuous bar that wraps through the space, which is punctuated with sculptural, fluted bamboo columns and pops of red. The menu is a influenced by Houston’s Vietnamese population and includes grilled and raw oysters, Po Boys, crawfish, and a large selection of rotating local and regional beer.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
In addition to its distinct design, Bam Bam offers guests a first rate technology experience with iPads equipped with OTG’s award winning customer experience platform, flo. Each tablet offers a visual menu along with entertainment options and flight information. Customers can also purchase magazines, gifts and other sundries that are delivered to their table as they dine, and even pay for them through the United MileagePlus program.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
March 2017 at George Bush Intercontinental Airport

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Interior Space and Exhibition Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
The corrugated aluminum bar die references the Cajun influences in the restaurant’s cuisine, while the back bar is comprised of gold mirror panels with red lacquer framework. Guests can choose sit at a central cluster of banquettes or at custom communal tables influenced by traditional beer gardens. The retail area has custom rickshaw-style carts covered in Vietnamese newspaper print graphics. A neon sign that reads, We were made pho each other, provides an Instagram-able moment.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
279 sqm. 77 Seats

TAGS:

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Several pieces of research were looked at when designing and constructing Bam Bam, including the overall layout of the terminal, traffic flow, local food influences, space dimensions, materials and labor. Bam Bam has been quite successful from a visual, media and sales revenue perspective.

CHALLENGE:
One of the key challenges of this project was timing and delivery of the terminal space. The terminal was built from the ground up and we had to coordinate our construction efforts with that of the base building construction.
