DESIGN NAME: Ember
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Restaurant
INSPIRATION: Texas was the inspiration for this design! Everything is bigger in Texas and we wanted to create a concept that would represent this ideology. C North is a brand new terminal at IAH Airport that was built from the ground up. Our goal was to create a concept with soaring visual interest that would complement the new terminal.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Situated at the entrance to the terminal, Ember’s dramatic design provides a Texas-size wow factor. This 127-seat steakhouse is located in the center of C North with 360 degree exposure to the terminal and features a canopy of 6,225 copper stars of Texas that float above. Inside, guests can settle into tufted red leather banquettes or take a seat in front of the large, glass-enclosed display kitchen.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: In addition to its distinct design, Ember offers guests a first rate technology experience with iPads equipped with OTG’s award winning customer experience platform, flo. Each tablet offers a visual menu along with entertainment options and flight information. Customers can also purchase magazines, gifts and other sundries that are delivered to their table as they dine, and even pay for them through the United MileagePlus program.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: George Bush Intercontinental Airport

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: Classic materials such as black and white tiles, copper, blackened metal, and wood evoke the elegance of traditional urban steakhouses. Diners sit under a wood plank ceiling and chandeliers made of copper pipes and exposed Edison bulbs. A canopy of 6,225 copper stars floats above. The bar area features a wine tower display surrounded by plush banquette seating. An exposition kitchen is framed in black tile, while the interior is clad in white subway tile. The kitchen has an open-fire, wood- burning grill. A special social media moment is located in the retail area of the restaurant: a sign comprised of fairground letters and neon lights that reads, Everything is bigger.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: 354 sqm. 127 seats

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Several pieces of research were looked at when designing and constructing Ember, including the overall layout of the terminal, traffic flow, local food influences, space dimensions, materials and labor. Ember has been quite successful from a visual, media and sales revenue perspective.
CHALLENGE: One of the key challenges of this project was timing and delivery of the terminal space. The terminal was built from the ground up and we had to coordinate our construction efforts with that of the base building construction.
