| DESIGN NAME: Lusitana PRIMARY FUNCTION: Lounge chair INSPIRATION: The design of lounge chair Lusitana remember undressed vessels that were used for the Portuguese maritime discoveries of the 15th century, trying to show the beauty of its interior wood structure formed by the ribs simply attached to a keel. This form of the lounge chair Lusitana intends to conquer a formal language, simple with organic rhythm and lightness. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The lounge chair consists of thirteen plywood ribs fitted and glued to a shaft of plywood and topped at their ends by two molded solid wood armrests. The legs come out of two ribs. This set of different parts linked together and with some structural reinforcements make it a solid piece. This lounge chair has cushion that is placed on top to give you greater comfort and that allows to be changed to several types of fabrics and different colors. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The lounge chair Lusitana is for home or business use. The spacious seating place and ergonomic backrest form provides the greater comfort. Organic lines and original design make Lusitana a beautiful piece of arte for your home. PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in Lisbon in July of 2015 since drawings and small model and finished with full-scale prototype in July of 2017 FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY: Furniture Design |
PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The chair is made in plywood and metal invisible structure using CNC technology and manual work. SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Width 840 mm x depth 900 mm x Height 1000 mm TAGS: Chair, armchair, lounge chair, furniture, manual, hand-made, design, plywood, handcraft, Paul Fitas, seating, ergonomic, organic, comfort, cushion RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The lounge chair Lusitana was born over several studies made for structures of other armchairs completely covered with upholstery when it occurred to me to show how beautiful it can be a wooden structure in sight. I gathered experience in chair wooden frames, fascination with naval structures and a taste for wood, and started this project, which went through drawing by hand, mock-ups to scale 1/50, 3D drawings through CNC machines and finally assembly by Portuguese specialized artisans. The upholstery was developed in the first phase by hand to fit the chair in a comfortable, practical and aesthetic way. CHALLENGE: With thirteen ribs a keel and two wooden arms, maked a structure, a body, with shape, movement, rhythm, elegance and transparency that results in a lounge chair that fulfills its ergonomic function and comfort, with the identity of a culture of a people and a creator.
