| DESIGN NAME: Smartisan U2 Pro PRIMARY FUNCTION: Smartphone INSPIRATION: Almost all competitors tend to make their phones rounded, and consumers have been unconsciously educated to get used to such trends just like plastic antenna lines. With the evolution of modern engineering, the inside structural mechanism of phones is more and more compact, we want to explore what such evolution has enabled us to do, and to demonstrate new approach of phone industrial design. UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The design of Smartisan U2 Pro is a narrative of the minimalist aesthetic principles Smartisan is known for and always insists. With the joint efforts of minimalist industrial design and efficiency-oriented UI & UX, Smartisan U2 Pro is a smartphone with both outstanding industrial aesthetics and elegant user experience, unique from its competitors that are mostly curved and rounded with similar user experience. OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Great industrial design alone does not justify an outstanding product. Apart from an unique ID, Smartisan U2 Pro also comes with lots of innovative software features, our goal is to create one seamless combination of software and hardware, thus providing an industry-leading overall experience. Smartisan is known for its great software user experience (named Smartisan OS), and we take it one step further in Smartisan U2 Pro. In the software iteration alongside Smartisan U2 Pro we focus on a dramatic improvement in productivity: catching your random idea at any time is just one tap away, complicated production-level text editing is easier than ever, and data sharing/transferring among multiple apps is now much more straight-forward. PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The two most-used materials in smartphone design are glass and metal, and the traditional approach is a metal frame with glass panels on both front and back sides. In Smartisan U2 Pro, we expanded the metal frame to the front of the phone, forming a uniquely-shaped “metal chin” that perfectly matches the glass panels, differentiating the phone from competitor designs, making it instantly recognizable. Glossy glass and matte anodized aluminum are arranged on the same surface, forming a contrast that vividly celebrates the different aesthetic features of these 2 materials. Traditional fingerprint scanners require a conductive metal ring to be functional, our “metal chin” design enables us to remove the metal ring, replacing it with a tiny chamfer, thus simplifying the design, making it more elegant.
