DESIGN NAME: MOTO
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Head Shaving Razor
INSPIRATION: Our headshaving products have evolved over the past two decades and the Moto's predecessors had wheels, like a car. The two main inspirations for the Moto design are the Dyson ball and Moto GP racing. The combination of the two, much like the motorcycle from the Tron movie, create a futuristic design based on functionality. Instead of the user leaning into the turns, the blade contours to the scalp with unparalleled success.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Moto utilizes a unique dual action suspension that allows the blade to contour to the scalp. The fully rotational ball, combined with the blade mounted back suspension allows the blade to automatically default to ultimate shave angle, while the rotating/jointed body allows the blade to rotate and follow the surface of the scalp.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The Moto allows the user to shave their head by feel. Just roll the razor along the scalp and the blade will pivot automatically while the jointed body allows the blade to also follow the contours of your scalp.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project started in October 2014 and became available for retail/online purchase in November 2016.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: The MOTO introduced some new technologies with the dual suspension and free moving ball. We could not use a molded ball and ended up using the same sand polished technique used on costume jewelry to make sure there were no irregularities or seams to irritate the scalp.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: HeadBlade has been creating headshaving products for almost 20 years. With each new iteration, the goal is to create a better, smoother, and faster headshave. From the original HeadBlade Classic in 1999 to the new MOTO, we have continued to blend functionality with cool design. HeadBlades are never "just another razor." The new Moto not only improved on the ATX, it brought into the ethos the combination of Dyson-meets-Moto GP racing-meets-shaving all into a small compact razor that the user gets to drive, and experience, on a daily basis.
CHALLENGE: The research challenge is that since 2012 most consumers have been focused on low cost blades and subscription services. Dollar Shave and Harry's both disrupted the market and all attention was on price. Design, especially handle design and ergonomics, was not even a consideration. We had to make sure that our newest design cut through the clutter and re-established great design as a factor in making a razor purchase.
