DESIGN DETAILS
DESIGN NAME:
Pisanica garden furniture

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Benches and table

INSPIRATION:
Pisanice are painted eggs, typical for Slovenia and are a true treasure of geometrical patterns. The wish was to bring this forgotten art to life, within a contemporary design piece. The section follows the shape of human body, when seated in relaxed way. Oak elements create a rhythm of wide stripes interchanging with narrow stripes. Only every now and than one of the narrow stripes comes with Pisanice ornament. On the edges of the benches the narrow stripes fold out to become handrest

UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A contemporary terrace furniture with a traditional twist. The seating is placed in the middle of the terrace, with living room windows looking towards it so the design had to be equally attractive from all sides. The result was a lounge type of seating, that would at the same time serve as a storage (invisible towards outside). A unique feature is little herb planter, following the narrow- wide pattern of ornamental stripes that run all the way from the feet up to the back and to the back side.

OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION:
Its dimensions follow strictly to the (lounge) function of the seating and desires of the client of smaller dimensions. There is no front or back side- the ornament is continuous and greets the user from the inside the house, on the backside, when passing by. The big inner storage, hidden inside the bench, opens up with a gentle pressure on the side surface.

PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION:
The project started in April 2016 in Kranj and finished in November 2016 in Kamnik, and is one of the finalists for Wooden Icon award 2017.

FITS BEST INTO CATEGORY:
Furniture Design

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY:
a 3D model has been prepared, afterwards a scale model 1:1 has been executed to confirm the (special) sizes of seating. A detailed 3D model of metal structure and the metal planter has been drawn in order to achieve precise measurements and a list of wooden elements to fit perfectly. Wooden- locally harvested oakwood- elements have been prepared to the size and screwed one-by-one to the metal (inox) structure with great precision. The ornament has been cut by CNC machine and hand-brushed. Two coats of tunga oil and wax have been applied manually.

SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES:
160/100 (table) 160/80 (bench one) 120/80 (bench two)

RESEARCH ABSTRACT:
Our design research was on one hand centered around what were the functional features the project should have, but also emotional pluses that would make the terrace seating precious to the user and technically lasting. We had to opt for metal structure since the load of oakwood is significant and only metal structure would be resistant enough, also to tolerances trhough time, due to weather exposure. We wanted to give the table a solid, strong look, so it like a leg, console, lifting out from the surface. On the other side, due to functional needs, it is supported by thin inox plate, equal to the one of the benches.

CHALLENGE:
The challenge was to find the cleanest form to be able to express openly the graphic strength of pattern, without over-charging it. We had made to make a very long and detailed list of all wooden elements with its dimensions and a very detailed plan of metal strucure- and needed various months to find a master to execute each part. All the gaps had to be perfectly equal, including the little herb planter that can be removed. All parts had to be manually screwed from the inner side, so no screw is visible at any point- and accessing it was a big challenge as well.
