DESIGN NAME: Salon de TE 2016
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Introductory Passageway
INSPIRATION: Inspiration for the introductory passageway’s design came from client’s requirement of evoking the visitors’ imagination with the feeling of new discoveries; similar to discovering new watches, with this we research various situations of human exploration and choose space travel as our main theme, this led us to create an physical experience based on the concept Space Journey.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Salon de TE purpose was to showcase over 150 international high-end watch brands and was the only hall opened to the general public at the 2016 edition of the Hong Kong Watch and Clock fair. The fair organizer’s requested the design for this hall to be different, therefore an area of 6000sqm was provided to build a unique introductory passageway, this design would include an entrance, passageway and a stage for multi-purpose activities, playing on the theme of new discoveries.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: To evoke the feeling of new discover our intention was to build a dark elliptical budging entrance to arouse the visitors’ curiosity as a first impression; this also functioned as a transitional space before the main exhibition hall where 4 arches with video panels at 4 metres high were placed to accentuate the feeling of space travel; dramatic lights and multimedia content enabled a heightened visual story telling experience for the introductory passageway.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: The project duration was 3 months from initial briefing to onsite completion, it was launched on the 5th of September 2016 and ran for 5 days, only 3 days were allowed for the move in and onsite set up. Salon de TE was located at the Hong Kong Conference and Exhibition Centre.

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: By avoiding the use of heavy wooden structures to reduce onsite wastage, the walls would be made with lightweight reusable aluminium systems covered with stretched vinyl graphic prints. The audio and video equipment such as the video panels and projectors screens were hired, along with furniture and props, biodegradable carpets were also applied for this area.
SPECIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL PROPERTIES: Inside the entrance two 1.5 metres radius space rock-like rotundas with motion graphics innards were suspended on the ceiling, inside the exhibition hall stood four 4.5m high arches with video panels that led past 3 windows with a diameter of 3m wide, introduced the different exhibitors’ zones; finally, a stage platform at 40sqm with a video panel backdrop held various product parades, cocktail receptions and forums, this final area also acted as an informal resting and meeting point at times.

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: Inspiration for the introductory passageway’s design came from client’s requirement of evoking the visitors’ imagination with the feeling of new discoveries, as in arousing the visitors finding new watches, the new discoveries theme was all about wonderment and the team decided to depict an outer space journey for the introductory passageway; as such, Space Journey concept was the central design focus.
CHALLENGE: The most challenging part was how to convert the feeling of discovery from a physical space to provide a sense of awe to the general public while only having 3 days to setup onsite; after analysing many ideas on exploration we decided on a thematic approach based on the outer space travel; making Space Journey as a core concept seems most apt for the event organisers design requirements.
