DESIGN NAME: Villa of Light
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Residential House
INSPIRATION: With an intimate knowledge and understanding of the Indian culture and religion of the Client, it was almost instinctive for the designer to immediately suggest LIGHT as the essence of design. What better space than the central staircase at the front of the villa to carry a spiritual message so sacred to the client and his family ? As spontaneous the client who endorsed with fervour the concept that initiated a spiritual journey together with the designer.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: From the staircase, light radiates from a core designed as an Indian pierced screen in steel. Brilliant light rays from this drum spreads through the villa. Elements of old and new falling in place, The Villa of Light spans 3 generations via the Barrisol ceiling in expression of an Indian inspired arch at the living room. Illuminated tones pamper to varying preferences for various occasions. Warmth radiates from the familiarity of an environment styled by family saris and heirlooms collected over time to blend with the modern ambience of the Villa.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: The interaction and flow of living in The Villa of Light are best expressed from the Client quote.
David really knows how to turn a house into a home with his dynamic design philosophy! Sessions with him are always great fun because he takes special effort to engage and interact with us to tease out our innermost desires and cultural preferences. 8 years ago, in our first home, David expressed our rich Indian heritage so beautifully that my wife and I simply had to come back to him for our second home. We are sure it will turn out to be heaven with his magic touch!

PRODUCTION / REALIZATION TECHNOLOGY: At a time in 2008 when Barrisol and Led with an understanding of steel limited to only architectural design, these were components well used by the designer in context of a higher level of appreciation from a spiritual perspective. An example of how well is this application of Thought To Form at the staircase can be appreciated from a composition of shadow and light where the illusion of pierced metal threads is in actuality an exquisite expression of shadow and light over aged Travertino marble.

The attention to details in context of natural and electric lighting playing a prominent part in being parts of the whole that make a fulfilling project is beyond decor, look and feel. Every curve plays a part in accentuating shade, shadow and light. The varying colour tones weaved in tapestries of greens and yellows were inspired by personal tastes of the family.
CHALLENGE: The balances that needed to prevail between passionate design processes and intense emotions from a client, his wife and children.
