DESIGN NAME: Uob Bank
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Privilege Banking
INSPIRATION: From the discovery of the mind of a 9 year old Malay girl whose essay touched the hearts of her elders as to how much of a future we can provide in context of hopes and promises for such intelligence, the designer posed the question to the President of the Bank as to whether they should design a bank inspired not by its customer but by its customer children. Hence a Bank designed as an experiential space to engage a growingly sophisticated client base that it can look forward to servicing one day.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES / PROJECT DESCRIPTION: From a very intimate aura with its sculptural enclave and an understated entrance, UOB looked out to the towering financial world of Singapore. In whole, the Bank was composed of illuminated forms from graceful sweeps defining spaces in sculptural expressions. Each space was a stylish statement of understated elegance encompassing not just form following function, but the five senses as visitors drift along with the rhythmic flow gravitating towards the centre where the main lounge was situated.
OPERATION / FLOW / INTERACTION: Very simple in operation, most facilities were operable by sensors, touch screens even at that time. Even the extensive artwork from a Bank reputed to be The Patron of The Arts in Singapore were all not hung but viewed through TV screens. However the human touch was still retained with an exclusive Butler and Conceirge Service from the designer Lifestyle Program Services.
PROJECT DURATION AND LOCATION: Location: Marina Bay Sands, Singapore
Project finished in June 2010

RESEARCH ABSTRACT: The methodologies driven by a futuristic design aspiration to arrive at such a futuristic Bank with Barrisol and LED were pioneer. Hence, Cosa who represented Barrisol and the lighting designer were very engaged with the designer in many mockups before finishes and equipment could be finalised as project specifications to create elegantly sculptured forms. The impactful result was an inspired client and staff with customers as touched by a Bank reaching out for also their children with the care given to the nurturing of a Bonsai plant from the private garden of the President at home translated into AV art for the space at the reception.
CHALLENGE: What is a bank supposed to look like? When the designer finally presented this concept to the Board of the Bank, the only question raised by the President at the end of the presentation was would be the contractor for the project? In its sheer simplicity in composition, it was evident to his discerning eye for design at its finest that attention to details from thought to form encapsulating design to construction would be the main challenge.
